How Long Does Citalopram Take To Work?

I've been on it 10 days now. After 1 day I could feel some unusual nervous energy and I think my mood had picked up a bit, my appetite was down and experiencing sexual dysfunction. Since then it is as you were, my mood is slightly better than it was and the same side effects.

So I can say that nothing has progressed in the last week. From what I've read it often takes 4-6 weeks for people to feel the full effects. But presumably they have experienced SOME effect prior to that. After some initial optimism I'm starting to feel that it might not work. Just have to try and stick in there. It would be helpful if anyone else had some experience.

Takes a few weeks to kick in, you might be feeling placebo effect which I might have just ruined :p:

Although sexual dysfunction is pretty common.

I guess your body is just starting to get used to it and that was the first sign with actual things you could notice. Just because you can't pinpoint anything right now doesn't mean it's not working cos 10 days isn't that long really. They usually say 14 days for something to start to kick in properly, and 4-6 weeks with AD's. Stick them out, and if you don't feel right by about 2-3 weeks then go for a review with your GP.

I've been on it since mid march. I noticed a small difference in my mood after a few days. I think i had the placebo effect though. I feel rubbish now. Think I need to see my GP again.
2 weeks in for me

At first i didnt think it was working, side effects i've had being really bad nausea, insomnia, loss of sex drive and bloating.

Moodwise its hard to tell. Its lifted my mood a bit, but more to mildly depressed as opposed to feeling fine,

Generally it will take at least 3 weeks for the effects to kick in

I never weigh myself, so I can't say. If anything I think I've probably lost a bit of weight as my appetite is down.

It's meant to take 6 weeks, but it took three months for me, as the dose was gradually increased and it didn't really start to take effect until I was on 40mg. But everyone's different. Some people respond well to 20mg.

Yes I have put on weight but many lose it. However, I would rather weigh the same amount as an elephant than be cripplingly depressed.

I've always been very thin so I find it hard to believe anything would ever make me fat! Did the side effects get worse with a higher dose?

I was underweight and I have put on a lot, but I think it's because the medication has made me stop obsessing about calories, and ****.

Not many side effects. I used to have a horrid pain/buzzing in my left ear but that went. It is a great drug for anxiety as well as depression.

Nearly 2 weeks now. Added to the earlier side effects I now seem to be more tired as well. Sleeping a good 9 or 9 1/2 hours a night - although I seem to keep waking up after 4 or 5 hours and going back to sleep again. Yawning a good deal during the day too. I definitely felt more energy during the first few days, now that's quite reversed.
We have no satisfactory answer as to why, but for some reason or other, it seems to take about 2-3 weeks for the full effect of the medication to kick in.

I have heard that statement before, but when I hear the term 'full effect' it kind of sounds as if some positive effect should have been noticed before 2-3 weeks. TBH Ifelt there was a slight positive effect in the 1st few days but that seems to have abated. Maybe that was just a response to getting it over with.

It took me about 4 weeks before I started feeling any positive effect. Although that's with 40mg.
stick with it, give it a bit of time, itll work.
I think it was 5 weeks in, it really helped me but I stopped taking them suddenly, which messed things back up again. Hey ho.

Why did you stop suddenly - because of side effects?

To the person above, 40mg is a lot. Most people usually start on 20mg, don't they?

TBH I expected to react quite strongly to it because that's how I am. One cup of coffee in the day and I can't sleep at night.
I stopped suddenly partly because I thought I didnt need them any more, but partly because I couldnt deal with the fact that I had issues and couldnt cope with them without medication. It was a similar time to when I stopped counselling as well. Its completly not advisable to just stop taking them, always follow your doctors advice on it. I'm going back today to get back on them. The side effects weren't too bad, think it was just nausea.

I can second the not stopping them suddenly part. Both times i've done this i've ended up with "rebound depression" which was worse than the original depression and led to be trying to take my own life.

But yeah....stick with it for as long as you can. Any antidepressent has the risk of side effects, and will always take a few weeks to kick in.

Best thing to do is make a note of any side effects troubling you, then order them in order of which are affecting your life the worst. Then you know which symptoms you need to bring up with you GP if that makes sense. Works for me as i tend to forget my symptoms unless i make a list!
