ICE Quest Scholarship

I'm going to Southampton for Civil Engineering this year and was wondering whether it's worth applying for this scheme or not? has anyone applied for this that can give some information or tell me the downsides or anything?

Also, Southampton have their own SUCCESS scheme for this, is it better to go with that or the ICE Quest one?

Thanks

Definately worth applying - what do you have to loose? There are no real downsides to the scholarship; you have to volunteer in three events that promote civil engineering over the course of your degree so I suppose that could be a downside, but my experience of volunteering so far has been positive. Other than that, you're not really expected to do too much: you're given £3000 each year to attend university, and work experience is arranged for you (which is a God send in times like these), so really no reason not to try for it  Can you apply for both Quest and Success? Personally I'd go for Quest because it's more prestigous, offers more money, and the companies affiliated with Quest are (in general) more eminent than those offered on the Success scheme. Obviously Quest will be that much more competitive, but it's definately worth trying for especially as Southampton is a top uni for civil, and has a number of staff on the committee.

Im hoping to go to Cardiff and considered applying, until I realised that you had to get a reference from school.

Which, with less than two weeks of school left, is a no starter. They took three months to write a reference for UCAS and I very much doubt that half of my teachers can even spell properly let alone know what Civil Engineering is.

Then apparently it has to be signed off by your school headmaster. it would have been funny a few years ago (We went through a four year period without a proper headmaster once) but now I have an idiot in charge who I know will end up losing the paper, not understanding its importance or simply fail to write coherently on the paper.

Oh well. chances of me getting it were extremely slim anyway.

as quest is competitive, i was wondering if anyone has ever known anyone from Manchester to get onto it? trying to figure out wether its owrth applying or not.

ive printed out the application form and filled mine in - mentioned it to head of 6th and she said she would fill it in for me.

Any advice/help - or experience which could help me?

What is the interview process like?

I've applied, need to send it off in a bit and school has sent my reference of ages ago.

I'd encourage anyone to apply for the scholarship, as it's a very worthwhile experience regardless of whether you're successful or not. About 20 or so leading companies attend the interview day, and it's a really good opportunity to get to know a bit more about a career in engineering and how the industry works. Even if you aren't selected for interview I'd imagine the questions on the form are similar to what you'd be asked in an actual interview, so there's definately something to be taken from there.

Going back to universities, while I did meet a lot of Cambridge scholars, I don't think they're looking for academics alone, but motivated, ambitious students who might be leaders of the profession - at least that's the impression I got. Just as an example, Nottingham supposedly has the most quest scholars in it's department, and Cardiff / Manchester aren't worse.

I haven't but I'm sending it anyway.
We should use this thread to record the receipients of interviews and subsequent offers/rejections (unless of course there already is one, in which case please point me to it). Thoughts?

Anyone have any details on this interview? ie dress code (unoffically) and what sort of interview questions they might ask?

The website says by the 1st of July. So I guess that means you could send it that day.
