i believe its an extra course of study in some sort of philosopical/ethical/religious type studies. i think its optional and that if you do want to do it, then you can have akc after your name, along with your degree. IIRC, you dont even have to go to all the lectures cos they are recorded and the tapes are in the library.

this is going on something i heard at an open day a few months back, when i wasnt paying much attention, so excuse me if this is totally off the mark

Sounds like what I heard. Didn't know the lectures were recorded though.

I reckon it's something worth doing - it's what, a couple of hours a week and you get 3 extra letters after your name! No longer Joe Bloggs LLB (London), it'll be Joe Bloggs LLB AKC London!

Yes it's a 3 year course, one lecture a week with an exam at the end of each year. It's all about religion/philosophy, and is quite interesting. If you have decent essay skills, it is probably well worth your time. Former Archbishop of Cape Town Desmond Tutu did a series of lectures for the AKC whilst he was visiting last year.

It certainly sounds velly interesting I might have a go. All knowledge is good!

is there much work involved outside lectures? do you have to do assignments and things? or just absorb information in lectures for the exams?

You get given lecture notes from every lecture, so read up on them at the end of the year for a 2 1/2 hour exam. You do need to turn up to most of the lectures but not necessarily all of them, and poss do a bit of extra reading. It is very interesting but i don't know yet if it's worth doing. Not that many take it up, though, a few hundred max.

I'm doing the AKC course now! just sat for the exam in march...results should be coming out by the end of this month.
there's actually not a lot of work involved. it's just a one hour, once a week lecture and lectures are not compulsory as well...loads of people turn up for the exam without having attended lectures.
there are no assignments although they do give you a list of recommended reading at the end of the each lecture (which i never read). apparently it's not difficult to pass...a lot of people came out with merits last year
