Whitefields!

Hah, anyone else who have been swept away by the beautiful pictures of Whitefield in the accomodation website? I put down Rootes as my first, by now I think I have changed my mind. 12 people in a little house, cozy little kitchen and cramped little room, also it's cheap! The pictures really make it look cozy, I want to move in there! (only slight setback is the single sex areas, what do they mean?)

Anyone else feeling the same about Whitefields?

All accommodation applications are done online, if thats what you mean by getting no forms - well there aren't any.

Yes it is amazing, and the rooms arent cramped, theyre bigger than old rootes and on a par with new rootes. Single sex areas...well, theres a room next to the front door (which was mine) and the rooms next to the lounge tend to all go to males cos they think if someone was to break in thats where they'd head first, protection sorta thing, its not like ur segregated tho, we didnt notice til someone pointed it out halfway thru the year, and not all the flats were like it anyway.

Change it if u can an put down whitefields, ull save a packet too!

I must say I was impressed. Thats why I put it down as my first choice.

Yay, so i'm not all being deceived. I know, i put down rootes as first before because of the whole "social place" and party party... but then it was like huge corridors, felt a bit too big. I don't know, since I'm a small person haha.

meh..joel how come you stayed in whitefields when ur off to durham? but tell me more, how was the shower, kitchen..?

And yes, Carolinedrew I'm from Stockholm too!! Which school do you go to now? I'm in kungsholmen, man isn't it fun with all the studenten thing... gosh, this is weird i haven't actually talked to any going to warwick from here! I'm gonna go study international business with french...

the corridors in old rootes are quite narrow.. but yeh wen i went to see whitefields i was so impressed! its lovely. and u have like a little balcony if ur upstairs which can look over the living room. its like a little house! very underrated halls.
Woo, Whitefields! I live there!

I like it lots - the rooms are a reasonable size - not enormous, but I bought twenty pairs of shoes and they all fit in perfectly well. It's a lovely set up - you get to know the 11 other people in your flat really well, and there's much more of a housey feel than in other places I've been to. If anyone wants me to, I can take photos of bedroom/kitchen/front room/bathroom sizes on my lovely digital camera, so you can see how lovely it is. But be warned - it's all painted yellow and blue with checky curtains (you learn to love it).
How do you find the use of kitches? Are people generally honest and not 'tea-leafs' (thiefs lol) of food? Did you bring standard kitchen stuff with you e.g saucepans?
Also, do you find the bathrooms busy or anything (are they cleaned everyday)?
I put it as my first choice, and think it looks lovely.
I'm a bit confused with the single sex areas, because if Whitefields is single-sex, why ask the question would you want to live in one? I put no or don't mind, so will this minimise my chances of whitefields!!?

To be honest, the single sex bit confuses me. In every Whitefields flat that I have been to, it's generally all girls upstairs and mostly boys downstairs. There's seven rooms downstairs, and five upstairs. So it's kind of single sex corridors, but because of the house layout there's not really any difference. I don't know if there are any entirely single sex flats - I've not heard of any, but I don't know most of the other flats.

As for food - I think the flat layout helps to minimise people pilfering from the fridges, because you know each other so well, so there's more trust. That said, somethings do get used communally - milk being one, which sometimes annoys me, because I only drink skimmed milk, so I get stressed out when people drink mine, and then replace it with full fat. Gah. Occasionally there have been mix ups, where someone's eaten someone elses pizza or whatever, thinking it was theirs. Things like ketchup, tea, spread, other things that you can nick a bit of without it being noticed, those sorts of things are liable to be used without permission too. However, I know of some other Whitefield flats where people have their own milk, and nobody steals, so I guess these things depend on who you live with, and what arrangements you make. But I haven't found it to be an issue at all really. If you've got something that you really don't want eaten, put your name on it.

I brought loads of kitchen stuff because I love cooking, especially baking! There's about one cupboard each in the kitchen, but I keep food in mine, and my crockery etc in my room, because in my flat there's a tendency for people to steal your pots/pans/plates/cutlery and not wash it up. However, in other flats this doesn't happen at all. I've got four saucepans in various sizes, a frying pan and an ovenproof dish, plus a few plates/bowls, and that's plenty. A wooden spoon is also essential. Don't bring too much - in my flat, everyone brought lots of plates, a full set of cutlery, colanders, whisks, fish slices... and since these things take up lots of space and can easily be shared, that's the best thing to do. Bring minimal things - there's a Wilkinson and a Tesco just off campus, and Costcutter on campus, where you can get anything you're lacking. People are generally willing to share things, so long as you wash them up.

Bathrooms - it's six for a bathroom and I've never had to wait. The one thing I'd change about Whitefields would be to put a sink in the bedrooms - most other rooms have them - because it's a pain if you're running late and need to quickly brush your teeth and there's someone in the shower. But since everyone gets up at different times, I've never had to queue. Upstairs, there's a toilet room, and next door a bathroom with a sink, bathtub and a shower over. Downstairs, they have a toilet room, with the sink outside, and a shower room next door. They get cleaned every day, as does the kitchen and the front room. You have to do your room yourself, which I prefer really - I clean mine at home, and would feel a bit funny having someone coming in to clean up my junk.

Good choice on Whitefields by the way! I really like it here - it's a lovely atmosphere, it's really cheap, and it's so convenient being close to everything. Hope you get it!
