Work experience...anthropology/crime scene investigation

In September I start my Forensic Anthropology and Crime Scene Investigation degree/course at Uni... Ideally i would like to find some relevant work experience in either field or both  but i don't know where to look.
One of my friends suggested working inn a Morgue/Coroners... Do they take on students?

When i start the course would the Uni help me find something???

Help please
You don't normally take on work experience in the first year but saying that the more you can do the better!

Im looking to go into the same area with medical / forensic photography.

Ring up the police headquarters in your area and see if you can go down. They may not neccesarilly do work experience but you can do a day visit and they can show you around the forensic department, if they like you they might let you go back again. I managed to get into the forensic department at Bridgend and sometimes it will go in your favour if one of your lecturers speaks to them first. You won't get any hands on experience as such but they will answer your questions and some may offer a work placement for graduates which is always worth keeping in mind so it's good to make the contacts.

Doing work experience in a morgue / coroners, again I'm not sure how easy it would be to do that, esp. in first year. If there is a teaching and research hospital in your area, they may well do work experience so you'd need to do a bit of searching around on the internet for that or your lecturers may already know who to contact. Applying to a regular hospital would be pretty hard and obviously post mortems are confidential and they don't just let anyone in student or not.

I wouldn't worry about it too much for now, get settled into uni first and then if you still want to, in jan / feb speak to your lecturers about doing some work experience over the easter break or reading weeks. If you get lucky like me, one of them may have worked in that area before and would be willing to help you out. The University should have contacts in those fields so if your lecturers are clueless then go to the careers department.

Again it's not neccesary in first year as you are only really learning basics, so it might be better to wait till 2nd year when you have a bit more knowledge under your belt.

Good luck!

Wow, thanks for such a quick and thorough answer
Where are you studying?? Im thinking about taking a summer course in Forensic Photography in my first year
I'm studying Ba Photography at the Atrium (Glamorgan Uni) in Cardiff.
Where are you?

I know how hard it can be to get work experience! and looking back, first year is probably the ideal time because your work load is generally less than 2nd and 3rd, but it depends what the course content is like. You may well find you have a module in forensic imaging, usually in 2nd year, at least thats the case for the forensic science course in Glamorgan.

Where would you do a forensic photography course?? I know the police training centre up north does it but they won't take anyone from outside the police which is a bugger, that and it's sooo expensive! lol

When I went to the forensic dep. at Bridgend I spent most of the day in the photography department and to be honest as long as you know the basics of photography and how to use flash you're pretty much sorted, they don't have strict guidelines when it comes to that. Most police forces have fairly small photography departments unless it's the M.E.T (who have very strict guidlines) and most of the SOCOS (scenes of crime officers) will be out taking photos of smaller crime scenes and of victims injuries but it's usually the trained photographers who are at major scenes and autopsies.

You sound very keen!! and I'm sure with an attitude like yours you will definately go far, it's always worth going that extra mile. I've spoken to a lot of medical and forensic proffessionals and they said nearly half of the applications they get are binned because they just haven't made an effort to go out and get experience / further training. You are definately on the right track! Don't get disheartened if there isn't anything in your immediate area, if you can travel further a field it will definately go in your favour :-)

Im off to Bournemouth University in September, on the open day we were told about these summer courses we could so i assume i would apply through the university but they were a couple of hundred each, so i'll have to get a job asap lol and start saving.

Well I did photography at GCSE and A Level...so i've think maybe i could cover the basics but i was hoping the course would help me hone in my skills for forensic photography but like you said there aren't strict guidelines.

I am very keen probably sound like a right geek lol ideally i would like to get work experience in my first year quite close to uni, but i doubt that would be possible....
