They offer 1* degrees here (UEA), you have to score over 85% or possibly 90% in everything though. I thought Oxford and Cam did double firsts - I'm not sure how correct this is - but you get a double first if you get a first in your first year exams and then your finals.

What does this 1* degree mean?

Alright. Is this a new degree classification? According to Chicken, you have to score 85% or above. Does that mean through out the 3 years, last 2 years or only the third year?

I saw some stats that there is no such degree classification, does that mean no one achieved it?

no it's not a new classification, i don't know about UEA, but in most places that offer them very few are given out and they are only issued for outstanding achievement. in bristol i think only a couple are issued for the entire university every year. most unis don't offer them - they originated from oxbridge i believe.

I think 1* is a Cambridge thing & basically for the person who comes top in the year.. not heard of any at Oxford, but doesn't mean they don't exist here..

"double firsts" are controversial - originally i think literally for people who did two degrees at the same time & got a 1st in both! but degrees are somewhat more time demanding now, so that's obviously nigh on impossible..

but the usage we (Oxford) have is normally a 1st in prelims & 1st in finals.. so perhaps i could claim i have a double first First BM..go me.. :p:

They are very rare, from talking to my professor only one has been given out in the chemistry department in the last 3 years or so (and I think it might be 90% rather than 85%, I can't remember - doesn't matter cos i'm not likely to get one!), and i'm not sure about how many have been issued university wide.

And trev - the 1* figures will be included in the data for 1st's and 2:1's, so you would hardly ever see them on their own in tables. And you have to have got a 1* grading in both second year and third year at UEA (since the first year doesn't count towards the actual degree). Not sure how other universities award them.

If there are a few people that have 90% overall, will all of them get one or only one person will get it?

I guess the 1* is like an A* kind of thing then.

Well put it this way - I got A*'s at GCSE without much effort, a 1* degree would pretty much be a miracle, and would involve a) a LOT more brain cells, b) pretty much no social life and c) practically living in the library.

And if there are a few people over 90% (which is HIGHLY unlikely), I suppose they'd all be awarded it.

Taht 16 year old Oxford maths spod got a started first a few years back, so Oxford do do them. Not sure if it's department specific though...

No idea about 1*, but a double first (certainly if you're doing Classics at Oxford) is when you get firsts in both your Mods (2nd year exams) and Greats (4th year exams). I think Oscar Wilde got one.

Reply 15

I thought a Oxford double first was a first in your first year and a first in your finals??? That's certainly what Oxford graduates have told me...

Reply 16

Classicists don't have first year exams at oxford, but for other subjects you're probably right.

Reply 17

when doing a joint honours degree, say english and classics, are two degrees awarded, or is it an overall achievement resulting in one degree?

Well, I got a double distinction in prelims and a first in finals at Oxford, but no-one mentioned anything about a double first ... I sort of assumed a double first meant sitting finals in two separate subjects...
