Well, I got a double distinction in prelims and a first in finals at Oxford, but no-one mentioned anything about a double first ... I sort of assumed a double first meant sitting finals in two separate subjects...

yes, & as i said in my original post.. i thought the 2 separate subjects was the original, literal meaning.

I apologise, my "we" common usage of the term was actually only on behalf of the members of Oxford university i associate with & have discussed this with..evidently not includding you..

but as it's an unofficial thing anyway, no special gold certificate alas, it doesn't really matter & wouldn't necessarily be mentioned.. :p:

& thanks for the 1* link Fluffs.. I'd never heard of them here! Maths & then Physics though..ick.

Must have passed me completely by when I was there, hence my surprise at the modern meaning  .

And you're right, it is completely irrelevant!

I obviously have too many ruthless, academically-minded associates..

Congratulations anyway though & enjoy the warm fuzzy feeling that anecdotally at least you have a "double 1st".. :p:

a starred first class honours degree - awarded to a very small % of people in certain universities.

Wow. Another item for my wish list.

Same here, lol.

I always understood a double first to be a joint honours thing. I haven't heard of 1* degrees before - they certainly don't offer them at St Andrews.

i've also heard of double-starred firsts at cambridge... they sound rather nice

 One star degree is already enough. It's way over the top. To get a double starred I think you need to get 96% or above.

Did you just pull that number out of your head  ?

Yes, lol. I think for a 1* degree you need 95% or above.

So a first starred its 95%, yet for a double first starred its 96%??? That's pointless (and also the biggest bunch of crap ever).

Double starred would just be starred on part I and II of the Tripos. Starred also means different things in different courses, like in Physics it apparently only means getting a first on all your papers (which is a hell of a lot easier than a 95% average). They don't get officially published on the class lists anyway iirc so it's all a bit pointless.

In compsci the top two get prizes and some of the top few projects get prizes.
