What are the nonwestern developed countries?

In your view, what are the nonwestern developed countries?

Some body may bring in the income per capita charts, somebody may use the Human Development Indices used by United Nations Development Programme (although their data tend to be at least two years old), while somebody may bring in Economist magazine or others' quality of life or some other ranking to decide which are developed countries.

Now excluding western countries, which are the developed countries in your view? And why?

Mine are as follows.

Japan - high per capita income on a global scale, world's second/third largest economy, IMO best maker of consumer electronics and efficient automotives that run well, without needing too many repairs to hurt your budget. Safe country, very clean.

United Arab Emirates - high per capita income, some of the most outlandish projects on earth, investing in various sectors outside commodity related ones, making the world's first carbon-free city (Masdar City, Abu Dhabi), world's only 7-star hotels, world's tallest structure, list of world's largest/longest/best/other superlatives is quite long:smile:
Emirates Airlines (amongst the best in world), Dubai Airport + plans to build a bigger airport larger than London + Chicago in size (work on this huge airport is ongoing). And the list continues. Also a safe country, not crime riddled like USA or western countries in general.

Qatar - richest/second richest country on earth, Al Jazeera, Qatar Science and Technology park, high standards of living, not many violent crimes. Qatar Airways. Hosted the 2006 Asian games with great success in fact.

Korea, Republic of - High income country on a global level, moderate by western standards. A mini-Japan in many ways (not to offend Koreans), makes a lot of ships, and consumer electronics and cars just like Japan although may not be quite as highly rated in popular perception. An emerging country according to many people.

Perhaps you should define Western. It isn't normally just a geographical term, it often decribes countries which are culturally, economically and millitarily aligned with the rich Western countries. For example, Australia and New Zealand, Israel, Japan, South Korea are often thought of as being Western.

So arguably, the only countries you could come up with have a combined population of about 6 million. I don't see that Islamic empire sweeping away the West emerging anytime soon.

I think this is just another West-bashing thread by someone who desperately hopes the West will fall.

Oh, and it's funny that the OP doesn't mention Israel which is a developed country in Asia after all.

Not as safe as you might think, workers and house maids are physically and sexually abused all the time over there, aswell as children being kidnapped by taxi drivers and raped in the desert. Crimes occur alot, they just dont get publicised much. Its all kept hush hush.

'Israel, Japan, South Korea are often thought of as being Western.'

What? 'The west' means countries associated with Europe and 'Christendom'.

There's a variety of views about what constitutes the West. Clearly, it can often include countries like Australia and New Zealand, which are culturally Western and indeed, largely populated by Europeans. Israel is culturally Western with a big proportion of its population being Europeans, economically and millitarily it is aligned with the West. Japan and South Korea are also allied with the West and have a lot of economic trade and ties with the West. They also have a lot of cultural influences from the West.

We'd need to talk about definitions to do this thread justice.

Israel is culturally western, with a big population of Europeans? Eh? Israel is Jewish and Arab, it probably couldn't be more middle eastern if it tried. Japan and Korea are in the middle of Asia, we trade alot with China. No were and not from anyone have I heard Israel and Japan(?) being classed as western countries.

hahahaha quote of the day.

I think Japan is westernized but non-western.

There isn't really that many of these developed non-western states - Israel is one and some of the micro gulf states that sit on tons of oil. I really can't think of anywhere the OP hasn't mentioned.

Just goes to show how many leagues ahead the western world is really.

General hilarity all around when people from Indian cities think having a few sky scrapers makes them developed though

Hong Kong, representing.

I remember hearing them being classed as such on Question Time.

As for Israel - there are lot's of people of European descent there - fair skin, light hair etc. There are over a million Russians alone.

Australia and New Zealand are 'in the middle of Asia' as well but are still considered Western. It's not just a geographical term in this context.

According to you it seems anywhere with pop music and a lack of crushing poverty is western. Who ever said it on Question Time must of had there own adgena because no one in thier rightmind would consider Japan or Korea western.

Israel is full of Russian Jews, not ethnic Russians. Jews are a middle eastern/central asian people. Nothing to do with Christianity or old Christendom.

If Australia and New Zealand can be Western there's no reason why other countries geographically in the East might not also be considered Western. It depends on your definition - yours is a narrow one. I contest the idea that no one in their right mind etc. it depends on the definition used.

Many are partially of European descent - due to mixing and conversion - and have fair skin, light eyes and hair - as you would see if you look at photographs of Russian Israelis, American Israelis, European Israelis etc.

To me, they are Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan and South Korea.

All have higher mean living standards, which is the definition of first world status.

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Retard.

I guess this is why Japan still believes in tradition and respect, things Westerners by and large don't care about as much.

The US is full of so called 'non westerners', yet it's still a western country. Being western has more to do with cultural origins, history, ethics and morals.

Apart from the fact that Christianity sprang out from Judaism .

Would you describe Israel as being Western? Because our friend:

"No were and not from anyone have I heard Israel and Japan(?) being classed as western countries."

If you would then that will be two people he HAS heard it from.
