Average age of nursing students on your course?

Hi,

I am planning to start mental health nursing in Septemeber, and i am going to be 22 when i start (eek!!) i was just wondering how old everyone is on your course and if i am going to be really old, in comparison to the others?

Thank You.
I'm a first year adult nurse at nottingham

I'd say 25

Nursing has a high proportion of mature students

Oh thats good to know, my friend said as well due to the fact i want to do mental health nursing there will be quite a few older ones.
I have just finished my degree in law....and i HATE IT - so i really want to go into nursing, and hopefully will enjoy this, this time around. I am so looking forward to 'getting my hands dirty' instead of just assesments and exams...

haha, you certainly will get dirty- not as dirty as an adult nurse, but you'll certainly have a few laughs in mental health

nursing is famed for being the 'mature students course'

every cohort is different - in mine there were about 5 of us straight from school, about 6 people between 25-30 and the rest were aged 30+ (about 12 people)

yeh but mine has been programme specific - it was always mental health from the start.
speaking as a future student nurse.I would say that it varies age wise you can get students as young as 18,19,21 upto mid and late 30s and even 40s on a nursing course.I know that when i hopefully start in september i been told that they take a lot of mature students as well as what i call youngsters on the different branches. Also our mental health intake has only i think 55 students where as the adult branch has about 160 students, the children branch 15 nursing students and the learning disabilities i think its similar in the region of 35 students
Hi I have worked over 14 years as a heatth care assistant, went to university my major was forensic science.

I didn't finished uni, but would like to get into back into nursing. At age 55 is this possible?

Yes it would be possible
You could ask your manager about a secondment (assuming you work as hca in a hospital)
Alternatively, you would have to do an access course at your local college (1 year full time or 2 years part time) and then apply to university that way
I know a couple of people that are in their 50s on my nursing course and they are almost qualified

From my experiences just from going to my university interviews at different places, it seems the average age is much higher than other courses. I'm 27 and didn't feel like I was crazily older than everyone else. I applied for PGDip so this may have been why as the people applying with me have all done a first degree. But even so, with the BSc people that were there, no one seemed like younguns. I guess nursing in general is quite a mature subject to pick, especially when you are fresh out of school
There isnt any average on my course it ranges from 18 ( me im one of the youngest) to late 40s and too be honest it does't matter since because i went straight from college to uni i can help others out on the academic side whilst other students who have more life experience can help me out with the practical bits

I dunno if it differs with unis for some reason, but at interview one I went to was mostly people 25 plus and another everyone was about 17/18.
