Is it part of something else? I had never heard of Royal Holloway until I saw a prospectus.

Royal Holloway is a great university that is well known in the UK. At least you found out now though, it's not too late. Assuming that you are applying for 2006 entry.

The schools under the University of London are (check this website): http://www.lon.ac.uk/Colleges_Institutes/home.asp?theDir=^Colleges%5FInstitutes^&level=0&id=533

Royal Holloway's a decent uni, quite respected (despite doing very badly on ths series of university challenge...), but it's quite a way from central london, so you can feel a bit isolated. Good academically though.

Reply 7

Just out of interest, what subject do you want to study ay Royal Holloway?

Holloway.. it makes me think of the prison are they near each other or is it just a coincidence that they have the same name?

Technically there're LOADS in the University of London, (some people may be shocked). But for a full list:

Birkbeck, University of London
Courtauld Institute of Art
Goldsmiths College
Heythrop College
Imperial College London
Institute of Cancer Research
Institute of Education
King’s College London
London Business School
London School of Economics and Political Science
London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine
Queen Mary
Royal Academy of Music
Royal Holloway
Royal Veterinary College
St George’s
School of Advanced Study:
Institute of Advanced Legal Studies
Institute of Classical Studies
Institute of Commonwealth Studies
Institute of English Studies
Centre for Manuscript and Print Studies
Institute of Germanic & Romance Studies
Institute of Historical Research
Institute for the Study of the Americas
Warburg Institute
Philosophy Programme
School of Oriental and African Studies
School of Pharmacy
University College London
University of London Institute in Paris
University Marine Biological Station, Millport

Some of these only offer post-grad courses, some are research units and some are more vocational and others are highly academic. A wide range of institutions comprise the University of London. Quite funky . (19 of these are colleges; the rest are institutions...).

Holloway has a good reputation  The Founders Building is amazing... I didn't apply in the end because my mum begged me not to go that far away (aww) and it seemed quite isolated.

The prison is called Holloway because the area its in is called the same name.

The University was named after Ben Holloway, some scientist who dedicated some land for education.

Rubbish! It's named after the founder, Thomas Holloway, a Victorian philanthropist (who allegedly made his fortune through selling quack medicines!)

I disagree...it's a GREATuni! Top ten in the country for research, for a start.

The only reason why it isn't better known is because though a member of UoL, it isn't actually in London - plus it used to be all-female.

 We did beat an Oxbridge college in the first round, you know!

There is a very (in)famous women's prison there.

Aaaarrggghhhh, please tell me you didn't say that! The women's prison has nothing , repeat nothing to do with Royal Holloway! For a start, they are nowhere near each other; RHUL isn't even in London for goodness sake.

My mum talked me out of applying because it was so far away, but mainly cos of the prison name . Half wish I had applied, cos I wasted a choice on Edinburgh instead.
