1. Describe some of the push factors that cause people to migrate to cities

Pushfactors include drought[1 mark, problem]which may cause famine as crops fail, leading to starvation and no income[1 mark, effect]. Flooding[1 mark,problem]may also destroy crops but may contaminate water supplies and caus diseases like cholera[1 mark,effect].

Footpath erosion
Damage to hedges
Wave erosion from motor boats
Woodland fires
Mountain plants trampled

Suggest how one of these problems can be reduced.

Limestone flags[1 mark, solution] are one way in which Park authorities have tried to reduce soil erosion[1 mark,impact] along footpaths. These strong durable stones can withstand the large number of visitors each year.

Physics (random note, i did this paper last year and got a B!)

1. When a star dies, a black hole may be formed.

Describe, as fully as you can, a black hole.

1. A black hole is an extremely small, dense ball of matter[1 mark], with a very powerful magnetic field[1 mark]. It has an event horizon further out, a point at which no matter can escape its gravitational field. It appears black, as no light can escape from it[1 mark].

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

2. In nuclear reactors, atoms which have large unstable nuclei, such as uranium-235, are bombarded with neutrons.

Describe as fully as you can what happens when a neutron hits a large unstable nucleus.

When a neutron hits a unstable nucleus it causes nuclear fission, where an atom breaks up into smaller bits[1 mark]. 2 or 3 nuetrons[1 mark] are formed as well as smaller bits of neclei. If the neutrons then bombard another unstable nuclei, then there will be a chain reaction[1 mark] and nuclear fission will continue.[1 mark-english]

2. A veterinary surgery has just installed a new computer system that has high speed internet access.

Describe possible advantages of the internet access to those who work there.

- Vets/secretaries can contact clients via email to notify them of appointment details/arrangements[1 mark], rather than by using the telephone as they do not have to make real life contact with the person.
- New customers could enter details via a form online[1 mark] which would reduce the workload of some staff as they would not have to type in as many customer details.
- Vets can use the internet to research new veterinary techniques and find information on medication[1 mark]. Though this should be approached with caution as it is not always possible to verify the accuracy of information on the internet[information is up to date].
- Staff can order animal medication/supplies from online retailers, rather than from specialist suppliers. They can make purchases at any time of the day and do not need to rely on a shop being open[1 mark], or an order form being delivered.
- If clients felt they needed to take their animal to see the vet, but were unsure whether their animal’s condition was serious enough, they could (for some health difficulties) email the staff images of their pet’s problem so that the vet could make a decision[1 mark] and then only arrange an appointment if necessary, which would reduce the number of unnecessary appointments vets had to fulfil.
- The surgery could set up a website to promote themselves and encourage new customers to attend[1 mark].

Oh damn it, I'm doing AQA as well.

I'm disappointed at the IT markscheme. My answers were right, but not in the markscheme. Does anyone know if the examiners would still allow it?

Btw could you add French or/and business next time? Cheers! :smile:

Spanish Writing

1 You have received this letter from your Spanish friend, Carmen.

Zaragoza, 13 de mayo de 2004.
¡Hola!
Me dijiste en tu última carta que hiciste una excursión de un día con el
colegio.
Carmen

Escribe una carta a Carmen en español. Menciona todos los detalles.

Menciona:

- qué hiciste el día de la excursión;
- si te gustó la excursión y por qué;
- cómo celebraste tu último cumpleaños;
- cómo van tus exámenes;
- algo sobre tu profesor favorito;
- qué opinas de las prácticas laborales;
- qué tipo de trabajo vas a hacer en el futuro.
Pregunta:
- algo sobre las vacaciones de Carmen.

Dehydration, following diarrhea, can be treated by giving the patient a dilute solution of sugars and salts.

The glucose in the mixture is taken up by active transport by the cells lining the small intestine. This allows the water to be absorbed by osmosis.

Figure 1 shows a cell from the lining of the small intestine.

Describe 2 ways in which the structure of this cell enables it to take up glucose and water rapidly

ps: Some of my ICT answers weren't on the markscheme either...Oh well.
I never realised how hard maths is on the computer! This is one example where pen and paper is better.
M'kay, done chem and bio. I feel too lazy to do Spanish, but will do some maths.
Reply 12
oh dear. I dont do spanish and i cant be bothered to do the challenge now.
Done maths, finally. Trig was okay, though I actually need to LEARN THE FORMULAS!! :rolleyes: :rolleyes:

I find it hard to believe that you'll fail. It's probably tucked away in there somewhere... :smile: Good luck, darling!
Just out of interest...Do any of you actually KNOW the answers to all of the physics questions? I mean, biology and chemistry are okay-ish (I can bullshit if I'm not sure), but I really don't know physics off the top of my head...
Reply 17
Yes, I knew most of the Physics ones, but I really need to revise stars and things.
So... when do we get the results?
It died!
