Are both considered a computing subject? i'm on Computer Science and all the subjects are sort of squashed together (everyone does the same thing the first year). I'm currently considering switching to Software Enginnering (and i have the whole year to decide)... But i know there are some more specialist subjects which have a differed first year.

No. BSc Ethical Hacking is a Computing course, BEng Digital Forensics and System Security is a Systems Engineering course.

as i said i am considering both.

the course spec would be appreciated as the site lacks alot of detail

thanks

I must say, the course has been altered since I commenced it... it looks like they've moved DFSS onto a more common programme with Ethical Hacking.

As far as employment opportunities go, however, I still stand by my previous comments. A graduate in DFSS has much better employment prospects. The Faculty management creating synergy between the two courses simply makes it an easier choice, IMO.

odd question i'm sure. but what is Ethical hacking? surely hacking by nature is not only unethical, but illegal?

Hey morgi, on a basic level ethical hacking is the practice of hiring someone with hacking knowledge to security test(attempt to hack) your company's software, network, website, etc... The ethical hacker is used to test the integrity of the software in order to improve the software's security.

ethical hacker basically exploits weaknesses in the clients website and aids in securing them. before the "for want of a better phrase" 'real' hackers find the exploits.

...the better phrase is malicious.

malicious hackers are called black-hat hackers, ethical hackers are white-hat hackers and no one knows what red-hat is; probably just a 'marketing' ploy for a linux distro.

Red hats/Tiger Teams are interchangeable terms for a group of White-Hat hackers working as a pen-testing team.

ah ok thank you, I am familiar with the term tiger team just not the latter unless it refers to fedora

It's a bit disappointing to hear that the Ethical Hacking Degree that's claimed to have credit globally, is purely metasploit training.

The Digital Forensics and Systems Sec, seems to be a safer more elegant bet at computer design and penetration.

I'd like to ask (for both degrees) what Programming Languages (if any are covered) are available for learning within the degree? I read that Object Oriented design would be covered, but as I'm sure a lot of you know, the convetry.ac.uk site is horrible for elegance in terms of looks and nagivation. It's truly the most horrible website out of all the Universities in England, that I've visited.

Anyway, no intentions of ranting  Thanks for your responses.

Ah, I also forgot, it appears that there's a _bit_ of math in DFSS too, judging from the main site; for a subject I'm not at all good in, does mathematics hinder my choice for DFSS? Or, is it just an additive, that's fairly minimal, etc.

Thanks.

DFSS covers C and C++.

First year module, only. And even that's only GCSE up to early A-Level. Nothing too taxing. J Notation, differentiation and integration is about as hard as it gets.

So, Ethical Hacking doesn't cover any languages? I'm appalled; Hrm, you sure do know a lot for one that just finished his first year, judging from your prior statements

Ah, I saw "Engineering Mathematics" and thought I was in for something I wasn't hoping for. I can deal with fundamental Discrete Math

Thanks again for your responsez, I owe you a beer.

I'm not 100% sure about whether Ethical Hacking has any programming involved.

Yeah, Engineering Mathematics isn't anything to worry about really.

No worries!
