The Student Room Group

Student Finance appear to have lost my birth certificate.

At least they haven't told me they've recieved it or sent it back. I sent it over 2 weeks ago. Stupidly not by recorded mail, but see no reason as to why someone would have stolen it. Getting really stressed now. No acknowledgement on the website of them having received it, still says pending & awaiting information. Can't speak to anyone on the phone of course. Any advice?

Sorry if this turns up twice, posted this in the wrong place before.

Some people have waited a long time get their things back. Luckily I only waited 2 days, but it seems that it doesnt happen often.

Have you tried phoning your local LEA, instead of Student Finance?

Centralised scheme will mean it's only dealt with by Student Finance England, and not the LEA. If he calls them, will just be turned away.

They told me today they are at least 6 weeks behind.

I have a teacher at school whos has been telling me to get in touch with my LA to claim a grant for my tuition fees. I had not heard of this anywhere else...is this something that was scrpped when the whole thing was centralised? or do i need to contact the local authority?

Sorry, I didnt realised that theyd centralised the system in England. In Wales it still all goes through the LEA.

Theft isn't the only reason items of post don't reach their destination. Most of them are just mis-sorted and then left forgotten about in a warehouse somewhere, or damaged by the sorting equipment.

I know you've admitted it was silly to send it untracked, but the moral of the story is that you really do need to send things like that by Special Delivery (Recorded is pointless, because it still stays with the normal mail but just gets signed for on delivery).

Having said that, the chances are that it hasn't been lost, but is just stuck in a backlog down at Student Finance England's offices.

If you do eventually get through to SFE and they deny having received it, you'll have to claim the costs for a replacement from Royal Mail, however without any tracking or proof of postage you might find that a difficult process.

And just what do you think happens to special delivery once it is there!!!

Only loans are available for Tuition Fees, grants were scrapped after 2005.

You completely missed my point.

Special Delivery is handled seperately and more securely from normal mail all the way to the destination, with barcode scans made at each stage of transit.

Recorded Delivery is sorted with standard mail until it reaches the delivery office, at which point the Recorded sticker is removed and placed onto the signature card. Between these two points no tracking takes place. Even once it reaches the delivery office, if it's not a heavy item, it will be delivered by your normal postman along with the rest of the day's mail.

Special Delivery will always be delivered seperately to the rest of your mail (i.e. by the 'man in a van').

There are still grants for fees, but only for part-time courses.

Yes I know the moral of the story, but morals don't put cash in my bank do they.

And I'm a she.

However I sent my accommodation contract by recorded today (before reading this thread) with my driving license in...now I'm bricking it that it will get lost too. Thanks guys!

You can replace your birth certificate for like a tenner online through the official register office btw, but I'm more concerned that I'm not gonna get my loan. Grr arg etc.

Have you claimed the money for your replacement passport from Royal Mail? You'll be entitled to full compensation if you sent it by Special Delivery.

They didn't lose my birth certificate, i sent it, they sent it back with a letter confirming id sent it, but now the fools have sent me an email saying they urgently need verification for my loan apllication.

They are now redirecting all mail to Glasgow and you can't track and trace redirected mail.
