Ok, so the thing is I need a car to get home quite reguarly due to personal reasons. I have friend who lives in Cambridge, surely if I parked my car at her house and only used it to drive home and back they would be none the wiser?

At uni life, almost all the students don't use car

But i'm not talking about uni life, i'm talking about being able to get to home and back again. I'm not going to use my car to go to my lectures or to go shopping with.

Hmm you'd be breaking the rules. If you have a good reason for having a car you'll get permission.

Yes and I am going to try and get permission. But it seems to me, if you park it somewhere and just leave it until you drive home, they are never going to know you have a car.

I would say this is correct. I know of someone who just parked their car in a street with lots of other cars and nobody found out about it. It's a bit like the keeping term rule - it exists, and is known about, but it's not very enforceable.

I have a question...

Why exactly, are you not allowed a car at Cambridge?

It might be difficult to get permission as you're kinda asking to bend two rules, the car one and the keeping term one.

Traffic, congestion and lack of parking facilities.

What is this keeping term rule I keep hearing about?

If any significant proportion of students in cambridge did have cars, there would be even more congestion that there is already, but more to the point, there just wouldn't be anywhere to park them - at least not anywhere that would mean you could conveniently use said car (i guess unless you were very rich and just parked in the lion yard). Cambridge just isn't a car-friendly place.

tbh though, there's just no point in having a car in cambridge as a student, there's nothing to do with it - unless you ave very specific reasons.

I wouldn't bother asking for permission as it's more than likely they'll just say no. Bring it anyway if you need it, nobody will find out/care as long as you're careful/don't use it to go to lectures etc. As another poster said, it's like the keeping term rule -- quite a few people don't stay the sufficient number of nights each term, but if you keep it quiet it's fine.
If it's for personal reasons as in, visiting a sick relative, they will probably let you have one. If you just want to see your girlfriend then they won't. But realistically, if you keep it at your friend's house then they'll never know.

You're meant to stay in cambridge for a certain number of nights a term

Aslo Churchill has like a massive car park next door to it, which isn't like the staff car park (its like the conference centre) so just park it there and it'd be fine - i don't think they'd know
To be honest it's just a question of finding somewhere to park it. I've known various students bring cars to Cambridge without permission; they've just found somewhere with unrestricted on-street parking to leave it. How would the college/university ever find out?
