The Student Room Group

Brighton 'Student area'.

I am moving to Brighton in September/October to start an MA. Having and studied and lived in Manchester and being used to having a student area (Fallowfield etc), does anyone know if Brighton has an equivalent? Like, is there an are which is more likely to have a decent, cheap room in a shared student/postgrad house?

Definitely the area known as 'off Lewes Road', near the Sainsburys and London Road railway station. Lewes Road runs between Brighton and the Sussex/Brighton Falmer campuses, straight past Brighton Uni's Moulsecoombe campus as well. There are other areas popular with students too, Moulsecoombe itself for example. I know people living in Kemp Town by the seafront, Bevendean (right next to Moulsecoombe) and Coldean (nearer Falmer campuses).
As the previous person said, 'off the Lewes Road' is the main student area. The student housing market is pretty competitive, especially in main student area, so some people end up pretty far flung. As an example of what's around, my friend's dad is letting a recently refurbed (inc. a second bathroom added) house in the moulsecoomb area. It's on quiet suburban street but with easy access (30secs to the bus stop!) the town centre at it's just under £80 each. Futher into town it would be £90 for similar. I hope you enjoy being in Brighton for your MA...I was an undergrad here and never left!

When I went to the open day at Sussex, I was told by the guide that Brighton was the 2nd cheapest area for student housing in the country (after Leeds, where I currently live - actually dirt cheap).

I can't help but feel this was a bit of a lie, considering the location, but to what extent is this... true? I know it's hard to average, but how much would you expect to pay for a house share "off Lewes road"? (not inc. bills)

Hmmm seems like he was searching the truth a bit - yeah, as there is anywhere I'm sure there is cheap property around but generally....well, just take a look on G4 Lets' website where all the shared property is £80+ per person per week. Homelets' were advertising some cheaper ones, but I haven't ever heard anything good about the company generally. I did a quick search on Gumtree and properties in this area ranged between £65-100 per person per week depending on size of room (lowest was obviously small single rooms). Can't think of any other student letting agents off the top of my head - got my flat sorted through YourMove.

It's strange because most people I knew last year who have now moved to that area, arranged their houses back in Jan/Feb and pay something like £90 each. Sure, nice houses, but ouch. About £3 less than we were paying for halls! I've been in Brighton the last few weeks and there still seems to be a lot of 'To Let' signs around in the Lewes Road/London Road area....seriously, my advice is to not get into a panic about it. Sorry, off on a tangent there!

That's actually really helpful and informative, thank you! I might actually look into off-campus / private sector for the first year anyway now considering how much on-campus accommodation is and that my loan will barely cover it :frown: a teeny little bit more expensive than I was hoping but still, happy times.

I live near sussex campus in the moulsecoombe/lewes road areas and pay £350 a month for a double room.

It might be worth looking at sussex studentpad it is the Sussex run website to help people to fine rooms in shared houses etc

Hi guys, if anyone is interested in living off campus next year, I have decided to take a year off and am leaving my house mates with a spare room.

House is really sweet, located on Dyke Road Drive which is about a 10 minute walk from central Brighton and only about 5 mins from the London Road trainstation which is only a couple of stops away from Falmer station. Rent is about 80 pounds/week.

The people in the house are all ex-east slopers, 2 girls and 4 guys going into 2nd year this October. All of them will be moved in by beginning of september.

Lemme know if u or anyone u know is interested. Need to get this sorted asap as I'm stuck with two rents at the mo.

email me at [email protected]

hi,
I am an international student and this will be my first time in Brighton!
I'll be at Moulsecoomb campus and don't know where to look for economical pricing -rent wise.
Most of the places ask for 90ppw and above ,excluding bills.
Can someone recommend areas that are relatively cheap and close to Moulsecoomb by walking?

Whatever you do, don't rent with G4lets, they will rip you off and there will be mouse **** in your bed.

As nothing recent has been posted for a while thought I should keep things going here. These are awful people with no morals when it comes to charging students at the end of tenancy for cleaning and maintenance that is a lie on their part. If you call out for maintenance they attend quickly, but if you call sealing in mould with sealant and painting over mildew before cleaning then you can't really call it maintenance. Please please don't take a tenancy out with them. They have no morals and will rip you off at any opportunity.

I also wouldnt reccomend Co-Apt, terrible student letting firm.

I was in a student six bed house last year, we all paid £600 a month (inc bills). Now in a four bed paying £530 (not inc bills).

Have a look at the Brighton House Hunting group on Facebook as well
You can always check letting agent reviews on sites such as WhichPad and AllAgents before you make decisions about who to rent with.
