Self harm scars

Last night I was feeling fairly down & started scratching my arm with scissors. I didn't cut myself, just scratched a lot. I don't make a habit of doing this, I'm definitely not a self-harmer, it was just because I'd been in a bad mood and then drank far too much on top of that. I'm just wondering, I've now got a lot of nasty red scratch marks on the side of my forearm, which are quite obvious. How long will it take for them to disappear, and can I do anything to help this along or cover them up?

Thanks.

Probably take a few days, maybe up to a week.

Oh, and you didn't cut yourself. You were drunk and fell in to a bush.

OP, self-harming is a very silly thing to do, and it can potentially put people off you because they'll think 'eugh I don't want to be with someone who cuts themself'. Wait a few days and they should go away, but DON'T DO IT AGAIN.

I think the OP knows that it's silly thing to do....but sometimes it's not as simple as saying dont do it again.

OP, like the others said it'll go in a few days, the skin is probably raised and red I should think.....that'll go down and then the cuts will heal afterwards. They might be really faint but you probably wouldnt notice them.

Try to keep them covered with a fresh plaster and use germoline/ savlon etc. and they should only take a few days to go away but it depends how deep u cut. U may be left with lines on ur arm and if u r try something like bio oil.
Describing self harm as a ''very silly thing to do'' is so bloody patronising.

It's a "silly" thing to do? Blimey, that's rather patronising! People don't self harm just because it fills in a free minute- it's a way of coping with angst amongst other things. Just because you don't understand or don't do it doesn't mean you can just turn around and call people "silly".

Back to the OP, I don't know how long they'll take to heal but you could try putting some sudocrem on to make them a bit less red.
Jesus people - how many of you haven't done something destructive when you've been pissed off and hammered? Get off OP's back FFS!

Thanks for those helpful replies. They are just like raised red lines, so hopefully they'll disappear soon. I did put antiseptic on them straight after, so hopefully should be fine.

I do realise self-harm is a "very silly thing to do" and if that makes me a "dumbass" then fine. (Very delicately put by the way.) I wasn't asking for judgement, I didn't draw blood, I was just not feeling my best. It happens, you know.

Thanks again.

Agreed! If you haven't self-harmed you don't understand.
Op, salvon is your friend. It will help a lot. Try to work out alternative methods of venting whatever is wrong with you.

I want to give you a big !!!
If you didn't actually cut the skin I don't think you'll get scars from it. They'll be gone in a few days.

Honestly, I think this is a very strange topic. How can you reach an age where you're getting rather drunk and still be confused enough as to how long it'd take for light scratches to disappear or how to cover them to post a thread on this forum?

Sounds like a cry for help to me.
OP I did the same thing with the scissors to my arm, and had the same marks, and they took just over a week to disappear completely. They were definitely noticeable for the entire week after, but weren't that deep. Please don't do it again, it doesn't solve anything.

I wasn't laying on. I'm just pointing out there could be an ulterior motive for posting, and if there is, it'd be best if we give the OP the help he/she really needs. If there wasn't an ulterior motive, OP can ignore me and there's no harm done.

:ditto: Yes!
maybe some bio-oil, it is quite good for this. unless the skin is broken.

Not really, when I started self harming about six years ago I remember wondering the same thing. If you're not used to getting scratches and its not part of your lifestyle (not the self harm lifestyle, the risk taking or I don't know, looking after animals, ok so not a lifestyle) and it's a new thing to do... I think it's normal to ask, especially on a web forum. I mean if she wanted attention why the hell would she ask here and anonymous (sorry for assumnig your a she, you could equally be a he, sorry). If I wanted attention I'd walk around naked or something, not post on TSR where you know you're gonig to get ignorant, patronising comments.

Bio-oil or Palmer's cocoa butter lotion. You can get it from boots.
i scratched myself once (very stupid of me) and it was a while back in december and i can still see the scars today but it is really faint
hopefully your scars will go away quicker than mines
