yeah thats a good idea, heh
well here's a scary bit of news (that I fouind out the other week). Walked into campus shop, they're now selling Aston Uni blue wristbands.

As for wireless, god knows, I gave up trying to get on it, it was so unreliable. My new accomodation is supposed to have wireless connection as well (run by aston guild incidentally), havn't been able to get on it yet. So don't get too exited about it. When it does work though you can do anything on it. Download anything, chat, no-one checks.

cheers dude, definaty should meet up guys
theyd better have it working by the time i get there presuming i get in. i wouldnt like not being able to download stuff occasionally..for free

likewise. i dont wana have to pay for net to find out it has technical difficulties and connection problems. that will not help with the downloading, nor will it with the routine internet access on a daily basis.

i cant see what the problem could be. when was wireless installed at aston?
this year, it was supposed to be running when I moved in, but due to 'technical difficulties' they kept pushing it back.

Lakeside, lawrence and dalton have the best connections I believe. Dalton is ok now, but the low rise is rubbish (at least last time I checked).

I shared a flat with one of the guys working on it about feb time (due to my flat being flooded - another story), and he was ssaying they were having trouble, something due to it being in a city centre and so only a limited number of frequencies could be used. honestly I didn't understand a word he was saying, so I just nodded and stole his milk. Thats all I know about the internet connection. Zip.

Had fack all when i was in lakeside other than some keycom dialup crap !! :frown:

I was in old cross last year, pathetic connections through the day (used to be ok at night between 3-7, but thats abt it (Keycom) and I was paying £19.99 for their 512k service.

Going to be in Lakeside this year  Anyone know if its possible to get another connection (apart from the keycom one) there ? I know they have telephone points, so a dialup connection should be doable I guess

eh? wait a mintue. dont everyone on campus use the same ISP?

and 20 buk for 512, thats quite alot. i was thinking it would be £15 max.

so whats the story, you have to get your own IPS's and pay them or is the conection provided and you pay the uni or accomodation peoples.

lakeside seems the most solid all round in terms of looks and liveability.

oh yea, what about phones. how does that work in lakeside? everyone got their own? how are the bills sorted?
I was just looking at this:

http://www.aston.ac.uk/downloads/new-students/enrolment.pdf

and it says that we need to send off a copy of our Student Loans thingy which I got the other day, why haven't Aston told me before?

ive just read that part aswel. thanks for pointing that out.

its abit silly of aston to post it up on the website. ive only ever visited it once and im sure many others wouldnt have seen this.

unless they said something about it in a letter which i didnt read, but yea seeing as they havent in letter form or even an email, i dont know whether to actually send it off. surely tuition fees can alwasy be sorted out when you go there anyway.
I checked all through my stuff last night to try and find a letter about it, but I couldn't. Maybe it's in a future one after they confirm your place?

yep thats what im thinking. they need to accept or decline us first in order to tell us about what we need to do to enrole.

but i guess we might get told to bring a letter to show proof of loan and tuition charges. we already got them from the studentloans people.

wohoo, not long left now.....our future will be decided on results day. dam you unconditional offer peoples.
hmm. my loan letters do say u just take it with u when u enrol. im not sending mine in case.. will wait till they ask for it/take it with me when we go. if we go heh!

Yes, but I was wondering whether it would be possible to get say an unlimited dialup connection through the phone point. Just found out though, you get an 0870 number. Calling internally (within lakeside residences) is free, but to dial out, you have to purchase a calling card (and the rates arent too attractive either :frown: ), which pretty much means its really no good.

As for the Wireless connection, I think its £9.99 for 256k and £19.99 for 512k, though it doesnt matter which one you take. You'll never get near those speeds at busy times  I hope they've sorted it out by October time, as its a right pita to go all the way to the labs if all you wanna do is check your mail/chat.
I think all my mates went for the cheap one, which was pointless for downloading (I think it took one mate 3 weeks of constant downloading to get a movie), but its good enough for checking mail, chatting and basic research (not that you ever need to do that).

bye bye 2mb broaband :frown: hello snail internet :frown::frown::frown:

lol, fairwell 1mb free upgrade from 512.

512 wouldnt be that bad for music though would it. and as for film downloads, its better to spend a night going to the cinema for them new releases then to chek them out on small computer screens or on tvs. it best not be mash up up though as in connection losses and proper slow speeds. my college was like that. alot of people jump on the net and it became slower than 56k!!!! if its like that its going to be hell.

oh yea what about computer rooms inside the uni, im sure you can have access to them cant you? and what kinda times can you access them? what about their connection? any better or the same?
