some people have shopping bought by there rents each week.......though agreeing with beN on cooking.....usually about 2/3 people cook together and share its easier that way........however, if you do go shopping by yourself pasta is one great and easy meal which also comes in extra large bags and so lasts forever.......

7 days left till results arrive! Apparently UCAS gets replies of the uni's decisions just under a week before we recieve our results so i'm keeping an eye on my UCAS Track.

Are we all meeting up when we arrive there? If we do, should we arrange a place to meet?

you will all be so overwhelmed on the first day. maybe if you exchange numbers and meet on one of the evening or daytime events

I made some great meals in my first year and theres a really good, very cheap butcher near the priory market, close to tescos wher eyou can get chicken and other bits nicely. I don't eat lots though and I've trying to be a lot more health conscious over the last year; eating pinecones, dust and lots of fruit. It is the way.

I can suggest thinsg to cook in freshers week to make sure you get nutrients you need to keep you alive and active for whats on store. I'll be on nearly raw veg and extra supplements lol

Aston's my firm choice  not enough people on here go/are going to go there, i suppose it's because it's quite small

woo
i see you put aston over warwick?

did you not like warwick as much as aston
Go pasta. got me through most of my first term that little beauty. The only thing I can recommend for fresher's flu is Vit. C and lots of it. I didn't take it and caught the flu, was really rough for the next month or so. For xmas month (always great time for partying), I took it and was fine.

that butchers is quality, best bacon and eggs ever. Go to the markets for fruit, veg and meat as they're normally cheaper and fresher. Supermarkets are good for all the other stuff, like pasta, beans, drink etc.
i got over freshers flu by staying in bed for an entire day.....though i don't recommaend this as i missed lessons which probably could have helped me pass some of my exams.....however i do recommend chicken soup......it worked for my flatmates

nah i liked warwick but it was a bit isolated, like you had to get the bus to go anywhere decent, where aston was in a much better location
hehe. yes 1 week today and we'll know. once we've all been accepted (which we WILL BE!! gotta think positive instead of getting depressed i think) we can decide how we will know each other there etc :P
How long do they give you to confirm your place/accommodation? I'm on holiday for the next two weeks so I need to find out whether I need to get someone else to fill in forms and things.

you'll have to call them and see.

My housemate once came back from the market with bags and bags of oranges. "Why do we need that many?" I asked Alex.

"The man said I was the best looking orange buyer of the day"

They dont do that at sainsbury's. If you go to the markets early afternoon they are often trying to get rid of their stuff so do all sorts of big bulk deals. for that reason its good to go to the markets with a mate or two.

anyone here in the same situation as me. ive been thinking for the past two days about the fact that i aint got a backup plan if aston tells me to f off. ive been searching for courses on ucas again and its its worrying me more.

felling so bloody anxious, ive even started to think of things like what if aston do accept me, is it because they want more people doing the course. when i went for my open day there was like 8 people doing computer science and me and one girl in the GIS talk. now this could have been because theres more than one open day but its thrown me now and im having second thoughts. flipping hell.

that is a good idea though, peoples on here having a lil meet up. dunno why its a gud idea but yeaa.....
A fair few people do computer science, but the lecturers are so utterly pathetic and can barely speak english, people just give up. You'll see lectures empty halfway through the year because people just dont bother, and they be more productive out of lectures. (You'll see what i mean when u get there...)

Computer Systems (will leave you dazed and confused)

Information Systemmzmzmzmzmzmzmz (thats how the bloke talks, cant speak at all. All his slides are nicked directly out of the recommended reading, so just read the book and save yourself some time.

Communications & information skills (just learn how to do a presentation and read... as if you didnt do that at school already... oh and you'll get a qualification in 'oral skills' - woohooo!)

Java/ada/c++/whateverthehelllanguagetheydecidetoteachthisyear - You'll notice the different ideas of lecturers and they all contradict each other at some point in the year, you'll think to yourself, "how the hell am i going to learn anything if they dont know themselves?!"

Artificial Intelligence - Good subject, great teacher, just dont miss too many lectures or tutorials as it isnt something you can really learn all too well on your own.

Maths - hated maths, and you cant do the maths unless you know the programming language (as you have to make programs to solve the problems)

Other subjects... cant be bothered to go through them all, just watch out for those and you should be alright.

This year/last year, 120 people did CS (at the end, after people had dropped out or change course)... only 38 of those passed.

Many people felt the way you do, we were all suspicious of if they just let people on the course just for the hell of it, half the people on the course were retarded as hell who claimed to have crap qualifications and poor gcse's, so we assumed that aston were desperate to fill places.

Aston is only really renowed for its Business school, nothing else, i pretty much hated it.

Dont want to bum anyone out, lol, but only thing i liked about Aston was the guild, great nights out, einsteins is better than gostas anyday and make sure you get to school daze, you're guaranteed an easy lay

Oh btw... CS doesnt have any girls either, maybe 2-3, and even then... they'll be nothing special.

twisted heaven thanks for that inside. that one nail in the coffin of the course beingclosed up and being chuked in the thames.

obviously theres problems with many courses about lecturers. my bro did economics at city uni and he goes one of his lecturers struggled to speak english. nothing can be perfect but you always gota make sure you can have a course that is near enough bang on in all areas. this is what gets blurred i rekon when applying.

aston wants a bbc because i didnt get a b in gcse maths and they still accepted me even thought i got three 3's in AS and got predicted three c's. grrrrr. i even knew computer science was going to be hard, especially for me.

i dont know jack bout maths, creating databases, program languages and so on. i even got my cousin bro to make my access system for my coursework in a2 ICT.

i dont even mind about not having girls in the course. at the end of the day how much time are you going to spend in lectures compared to socialising.

i think i feel a change in course comming along.

maby GIS and business administration.......

anyone experienced business admin???

You'll be really lucky, Aston business school isnt taking any more applications mate, way too many people applied this year, i think there will be some over-subscribed courses too.

Go for Psychology, loads of fit birds on that course, hehehe

found a course at leicester. computer science with management.....hmmmm worse comes to worse i gota try there and hope. they want 300 points for computer science on its own and 280 for comp science with management.

maaan. im on the worry flex now.

twisted heaven, do you regret doing computer science at aston or did you want to do it there and then when you got there you found out it was mashed.

even though the business school is packed, depends how many people get the grades aint it? but then again it also depends whether aston decides to still keep them or kik them out.........any ideas on what i should do.

Dont get me wrong, i love birmingham, i love the bullring, i love what it has to offer and the social life...

Aston University itself, was and still is a severe dissapointment for me. I went for the wrong reasons (purely because i liked the accomodation, it seemed like a small friendly uni and its in Birmingham City centre).

Like i said, the best thing about it is the Guild, many a good memory, but i just had enough of it this year after plenty of issues with messed up lectures, botched exam papers (the 1st year we got screwed around as one lecturer fell ill, so we didnt even start one of the modules, which was damn fkin hard until the end of the year when it was impossible to learn everything).

It was just my experience, many of my friends dropped out and transfered because it wasnt what they thought it would be, i wish i had made a decision to go elsewhere sooner.

I was offered a place at birmingham, but chose aston, a decision i regret badly. Ill be hoping to go somewhere else in clearing now as i dont ever want to use a computer for anything other than internet and porn (lol).

Sitting infront of a computer for the rest of my life in a 9-5 job doesnt appeal to me anymore.

I guess i can thank Aston for screwing me over and changing me into the person i am today, so i can see what i actually want to do with my life.

I guess i have a little angst

But this has just been my experience, other courses may be different, so i dont want to scare people off Aston completely!

ive heard that astons social life is good. i got cousins in wolverhampton who say its good, got a mate who says its good there and just generally anyone who talks about aston says that its good.

but then again it is really about the courses cos you gota get a degree at the end of the day.

maby it werent good for you because it also made you realise that computers aint for you.

so how many years were you there and what you planning on doing now.

think we need astonbitch to give some feedback on comments seeing as she did comp science aswel. if both experiences match up then i think i really am going have to find somewhere else.

when i went for open the i had a good feeling around the area around the uni like the city centre. itas just so good. like a smaller version of london, but im bored with london which is the reason i wanted to get outa london. what else could be better than the second biggest city in the uk.

I was there for 2 years, i only stayed because i wanted to be with my gf and loads of my friends lived inthe area who didnt go to uni, i enjoyed the social side, but as far as the course, its not very organised, things dont get explained too well in lectures (thats why we have recommended reading books to buy... about £300-£400 worth unless you rent from the library), and most of the lectures were spent making fun of the lecturers english...

Im trying to do engineering/civil engineering, but so far Birmingham have turned me down as i dont have a-level maths which is a b1tch, lol

If not, Business administration & sociology or something along those lines.

If i dont get into another uni, i dont know, havent thought that far ahead and have high hopes of getting somewhere.

I might even try another course at aston, but nothing computer related.
ah sorry havvnt been around............been to busy going out........

im not gonna lie as aston is more renowed for its business school.........and not many girls do CS i'm afraid...........but (now this is gonna sound really backwards) i actually didnt mind the course it is true that most people don't go to lectures (me included) but thats beacuse i found it easier to learn in a small environment so if i had actually bothered to take the time to learn i would now be in my second year instead of resiting four modules......i also know some people in 2nd and final years of Cs who didnt mind the course to much either..........i believe they are now teaching java.........im doing computing for business which although is single honours course ( i think) gives me business qualifications too which may be a reason for me liking my course..........the amount of people dropping out.........from what i saw on my course not that many people dropped out..........and i only know of about 5 who have and thats over a variety of courses.........i went to several open days for my course and made sure it was what i wanted before i chose aston..........

well there is my two cents dunno if it helped
