Queen's University in Canada

Anyone know much about Queen's? It's in Kingston, Ontario and I've never even been out of Europe. If I pass my exams this month then I'm spending next year there! I've read bits and pieces about it, so I'm expecting a freezy cold Christmas and lots of ice skating, but I don't really know much else. Has anyone here been to the university, or to Kingston? Just fancy some first hand advice, if anyone's got any...?
Lots of thanks in advance
Emma

I'm spending next year in Canada too (results permitting of course)! But i'm going to Calgary, Alberta which is quite a way from Ontario! However I've been warned that temperatures in winter go to about -30 degrees  !!!

It's a bit crazy how big Canada is, isn't it? Because I have family who live there, on Vancouver Island, but that's 2900 miles away - that's over 1000 miles more than the distance from London to Vienna, and back again! So maybe I wont pop over for a visit on an odd weekend...

Queen's is one of the most selective universities in Canada. Which program did you apply to? I know it has a kickass commerce program, life sciences, and generally is good at everything. It's about 3 hours or so from Toronto, and maybe 2 hours from Ottawa, so you'll have 2 big cities nearby. The town itself is supposed to be very nice and the campus I heard is simply gorgeous. I'm sure you'll have a great time!

I'm doing philosophy there - I'm at Warwick at the moment, and the year at Queen's counts as my second year. Thanks for the info - I've heard Kingston is a pretty small town, which is fine by me because I have a tendency to get lost easily, but having big cities close(ish) by will be good for important things like shopping...
Ooh, I'm so excited about going! I just have to pass my exams first, which is a scary scary prospect.

Ooh good - I've heard the campus is pretty, but the people who own the university would say that, so it's reassuring that other people think so too!

I have family on Vancouver Island too! And also in Calgary, which will be good for when my laundry needs doing  . You can get some cheap internal flights across Canada, so you can go over for maybe a bit longer than a weekend! Having been to the Island, i'd say its well worth a visit.

Calgary is GORGEOUS! You will love it there. Most of my family lives there, and I have been there so many times, I totally love the place. And my parents are moving to Vancouver Island in the summer. If you have any questions about Calgary PM me, cos I could probably help you out, or ask my aunt who lives there!
Im very excited for you lol, you're gonna have a wicked time!! :tsr:

Thanks  I've already been there once, stayed with my Dad's uncle for a week and then wen hired a campervan and went through the Rockies. Was the best holiday ever  . I don't suppose you know anything about the nightlife in Calgary? Cos I was 16 when I went and too young to find out for myself!!!

Wow, hooly **** is all I can say

I live on Vancouver Island

I have family in Britain

Now, concerning queens university. Kingston is a beautiful city. It is home also to Canada's Royal Military College. It's a very British city, also was home to Don Cherry, and other famous Canadians.

Here are some links to famous sites in Kingston

Kingston is a cute place.I've been to Canada numerous times. The weather in the east is mainly...very cold in winter(I went at the end of March and it was freezing and everyone was going,"Oooh isn't it warm?",lol) and in the summer it gets hot but it's a very muggy heat.

I <3 Canada!

Queen's campus is GORGEOUS! Think old and classic architecture - sort of like University of Toronto. Absolutely lovely.

It's a very respected university and like canuck stated, it's good for pretty much any program, but huge for commerce.

Tons of school spirit!... People are damn proud to go to Queen's!

Students joke that Queen's is one of those elite school where most students think they're better than all the other schools, and that's mainly due to the fact that the school is kind of old (solid reputation) and it is one of the best universities in Ontario and rather hard to get into.

Kingston is an okay city. It's got enough to keep you busy, and if not, it's only a few hours from Toronto or Ottawa. From what students who've gone to Queen's say - the social scene gets WILD on the weekends!

Oh yeah, and it gets COLD in the winter and HOT in the summer, lol

Anyway, yeah, I'm just kinda spurting out random things. I'll stop now. >_<

Yeah, I'm considering Queen's next year. I'm an Ontarian - so i know a bit about it - gorgeous architecture (very old), close-knit community, lots of extra-curricular clubs. As mentionned before, well known for commerce, but excels at everything from arts to engineering. Once you graduate, you'll be proud to have a queen's degree.
Negative aspects: not too many, but kingston is a small town (with pretty much one main street) so any fun that happens is started by the university students themselves. Ontario isn't as cold as say, Yukon, but Kingston can still get a bit chilly and they're not too good with snow-plowing everything up there.
Hope that helped.

I'm Canadian as well and my final decision was between Queens and Durham/St Andrews. I ended up choosing to go to Durham (hopefully), but Queens is amazing as well. It does get VERY cold though, so bring lots of warm clothing and many scarves! Vancouver is rather far from Kingston (I've never been farther west than Ontario and I was born in Toronto!), but you can fly there from any major Canadian airport. Also, anyone going to Queens must go to Tim Horton's and eat Timbits! They are very amazing

All I can say is Queen's is full of girls so that's why it's worth going. Apart from that, Tim Hortons is great but a lot of Canadians are a bit ashamed of it as it's a bit naf. I don't care though. It's such a cheap place to get a cup of coffee. At least you don't feel like you've been raped in the arse every time you buy something, unlike when you get a 3 quid latte at Starbucks in London.

I remain convinced that my friends' Starbucks addictions cost them more than our $30,000/yr tuition.
