Alright, so I am gay and the other night I was talking to this friend (who is straight by the way), and I linked him to this documentary on gay people.

So he watched it for a while but then he freaked out and said, "You didn't tell me the documentary was about lesbians as well!"

I was like: :lolwut:

I explained that if someone says that he/she is gay it means they are attracted to members of the same gender! So it doesn't matter if it is used for a man or a woman.

He then said, "How would you like if called you a lesbian?"

I was like: :lolwut: for the second time that night.

Hence I explained that the term "lesbian" was only applicable when implying female homosexuality.

The bottom line, he argued that using the term "gay" for lesbians is being sexist. Do you lesbians feel similarly?

Gay refers to either men or women. There are gay men and gay women, gay women can be called lesbians too.
It's not sexist, your friend is just stupid.

Gay is just a less formal term for homosexual. It's generally more male-focused, thus phrases like "gays and lesbians", but it can be used for either. I don't think I've ever seen anyone have a problem with it.

I prefer the word gay.

My friend told me he was gay, and I said, 'so am I' and he was like, dont you mean you're a lesbian, and i was like :lolwut:

i just dont really like the word lesbian
I agree, I don't like the word lesbian. Its for nothing more than I just don't like how the word sounds.

I am bisexual but have found similar situations where people use the word gay, as just a description for gay men, which I do find a bit annoying. Don't forget the lesbians too!

I prefer the word gay to lesbian, the word lesbian sounds a little strange to me for some reason.
