Thought I'd create a separate Lions thread to contain my excitement. :woo:

Lions talk goes here!

Do we think Geech is going to put a pretty much full strength team out at the weekend? I think we can safely assume that those who played the H.Cup final wont be in contention.

Thoughts?

Maybe not full strength but it'll be strong as you wanna get the tour rolling with a win, and it should be.

Considering it's made up players from mainly the Vodacom (3rd Tier) league, although I guess in SA that's a bit like just under the Premiership here haha

i think they'll mix it up, hopefully get to see Ugo playing at least a half, his strength and pace will destroy some of these lower league players.

anyone know what day the sqaud is announced?

who is captain in o'connells absense? providing o'driscoll also isnt on the pitch, i bet he picks someone like vickery haha

Are we talking about O'Connell not playing this week? Or just in general when he's not playing?

Generally they either have a midweek captain or a mixture. 2005 had Gordon Bullock mainly as midweek captain, with, if I remember rightly, Michael Owen () and Martin Corry stepping in.

Keith Wood used to captain whenever Johno didn't in 2001. Not sure who was midweek captain though.

I really hope they don't do what Woodward did last time and create two totally distinct squads. Makes it too difficult to stake a claim for the test jerseys. Reference being to Shane Williams who was consistently good on tour, yet didn't get a look in until right at the end. Ditto Donncha O'Callaghan.

That being said, Woodward did take seemingly every professional registered player on these freaking islands!

I reckon the team will be announced today. :eek3:

yeah sorry i meant whenever he's not playing, i have no idea if they'll play him this week.

in 2005 Martin Corry captained the side for the tests after o'driscoll got dumped on his head after 30 seconds i think but then he wasnt picked for the final test because Ryan Jones came in and played so well so im not sure who captained the final test.

I think geech is quite open minded and everyone on the tour has a shot. In terms of english players at the moment Flutey is the main contender for test spot but Jamie Roberts can change all that.

Ugo im really hoping can play himself into the test team. Halfpenny already missing for at least the first test, williams hasnt looked his best this year and tommy bowe in with a good shot for the other wing.

I think Ellis will be bench scrum half no matter who they pick to start. Blair or Phillips to start with Ellis on the bench to come on in last 20 and make an impact if needed.

Sheridan will battle Gethin Jenkins for number 1 shirt with Euan Murray i think taking number 3. but if Jenkins wins that battle i can see them going with Vickery on the bench for experience and he can cover both sides.

Worsley has the potential to play himself into the test team, his defence against wales and ireland in the six nations (yes i know we lost) was awesome, he's the lewis moody of the squad for me, will put his body on the line for anything (id put him down as most likely to pick up a serious injury too).

Shaw i think will feature in the midweek but will struggle to make a test team, POC and DOC are my favourites to start with Alun Wyn-Jones hot on their heels.

Mears is probably the favourite to start at hooker now but i'd like to see Ross Ford play himself in as he was my pick for hooker months ago during the six nations and i like it when my predictions come together.

Croft has all the makings of a world class athlete, by the next lions tour i think he'll be up there with the best players on the planet. as for this tour i think a starting place in a test is a little far with the talent already in the back row with Ferris, heaslip, williams, wallace etc to compete with, he has a shot at a bench place as his ability to cover 6,7,8 and lock could be seen as a big advantage.

overall its been another poor season for the boys in white and this will be reflected by the few if any players making the test team, majority will be wales and ireland but from today onwards that doesnt matter, the boys in red are our British and Irish Lions! come on lions!!

Quoted for truth! :woo: Come on you Lions!

I'm even supporting Jamie Roberts. And trust me, that takes a lot. :yep:

I thought Gareth Thomas came in as captain after Drico was piledrived? I remember him scoring in like the 1st minute of the second test and me and my brothers shouting and screaming at the TV. Then, if I remember rightly, POC stupidly flopped on a ruck and got yellow carded. Lost all our momentum...

English players have a chance. I hope to got Flutey and O'Driscoll are the centres, it will be immense. Flutey has quick feet, so he will likely tie in the defenders around him, allowing Drico to run off him. We want Flutey creating the space, not leaving it to an aging Drico! Plus, he's a decent kicker. Roberts is too one dimensional imo.

Worsley definately has a shot, but its a slim one. The back row is sooo competitive, especially 7, where I think Joe is best. To get past Williams and Wallace will be a mammoth task. But it's the Lions, so you never know!

Ugo would be awesome. A big strong winger coupled with a quick one like Bowe/in-form Williams/Halfpenny/Fitzgerald would work wonders. I think back to when England had Robinson/Lewsey on one wing and Ben Cohen on the other.

It's a shame really, because based on current form, I'd have had Fitzgerald on one wing and Mark Cueto on the other! (with Geordan Murphy at Full Back :ninjagirl:) Alas, too many wingers though

Seems like the backline (bar a few exceptions) is more of a experiment really... Forwards looks decent enough although I imagine there'll be a fair few changes there too.

Guess you've got to remember that many players played in the HC final

Slow down you two! Early days yet! :p:

They've gone for a mixed bag of a team, which is nice. I'd agree that Flutey and BOD may get a go together next week.

I hope that Worsley gets a go in at least one of the tests. He's been brilliant at international level this season, and I doubt he will be in contention for the next Lions tour. He has definitely earned it imo.

He'd be good at reducing the threat of the SA backline anyway and should hopefully neutralise De Villiers...tree cutter Worsley and all

:yep:

It;s just whether the coaching staff want to go down the neutralisation route with the BokKes. You have the potential to lose a valuable flanker if his no. 1 mission is to stop the backline.

My only concern is that it's quite negative, I think we should be playing a tough game to take them on in attack. I don't mean Hairspray's version of rugby that is more akin to basketball, I mean big carriers like Heaslip etc taking the ball on. I'm not saying Worsley can't play a part in that, I just don't think his man-marking defence will be enough to get him into the test side.

It's very competitive. Although the 6 jersey is up for grabs imo. Wallace vs. Williams for the 7 jersey and I'd like to think Heaslip is front runner for 8.

I fear Pierre Spice though... he can run the 100m in 10.7 seconds! A number 8!

 Worsley has been tried and tested countless times. He is the best defensive flanker in the NH, and with mauls coming back, there's nobody else I'd rather have at number 6. He will be playing even better at blindside, after all that is his specialist position, and Jonno was playing him on the openside this year.
