i am very confused lately and no one seems to be listening to me. well, i have been flitting between ideas for a degree to do at univeristy as i have always thought that was where i would end up, just not sure what i would be doing. lately for the past year or so i thought i was sure that i wanted to do a maths degree and have been looking at it.

but recently i have been looking back at what i always wanted, and still do, want to do which is writing. i would love to be a journalist or author and am working on my novel as we speak, well as you read...

it has been my dream since i was 8 years old and when i was that old and told my mum what i wanted to do she said, 'well people dont get too much money for that so you should look for a back up because its a one in a milion chance you will get a job in that feild'

so i began to look for a secon thing i could do for a job, cming up with things like marine biologist, archaeologist, palientologst, biomedicist, actuary. ect and recently i have been thinking that maybe this so called 'back up plan' has taken over from my actual dream. i told my parents about this and rather than talk to me about introducing writing they say i should do the degree in maths and maybe do a few modules in writing then afterwards i dont need to do a job in the degree i do, then i can do some writing.

i only say this because i have been more and more hating the 'red brick' unis as they seem too stuck up for me and every time i go to an open evening and see a lecture on maths and how it is taught i shy away in fear and dont like what i'm hearing. im not sure ill like it at uni at all and also dont really want to go to uni but i am afraid if i dont that i wont get a good job as i want to earn a decent amount but still have fun in my job.

i feel like my mum wont respect me if i do what she deems 'airy fairy subjects' and i want more than anything to become a writer and feel if i work too hard on maths that it will take too much of a backseat and i wont be able to get into writing.

i am really confused and just need some people to give me some help on what i should do. im not too near uni, i am in the first year of sixth form, so am not too worried about getting it sorted out straight away i just feel like im not being listened to and want some ideas, opinions and help on my rant. lol.

sorry for making you read this much, and i hope i have got my ideas across correctly. thanks

Don't let yourself be pressured into taking a subject you don't want to take it's your fuure and if you take a degree your unhappy with there is a greater chance you'll drop out. Take something related to what you want to be at uni and even if you don't get your dream job there will be plenty of related jobs in that field that you can look into especially if its a more traditional subject rather than a highly specialised one.

read the book Youth by J.M. Coetzee.

It is autobiographical, he graduates with a degree in maths and works as a programmer in london while trying to be a writer.
