I've already read Spikeymike's guide to removal..I'm doing a full virus scan at the moment and it's already scanned the registry which is where the virus is and came up with nothing..I'm using AVG Internet Security. I got the virus from very stupidly using a crack.exe  . I'm just going to leave the scanner to do it's thing even though i'm pretty sure it won't come up with anything (it's been scanning for an hour and 10 min)

The virus: I get this message - "Fatal Error!!! The media system on your computer is corrupted, update you sound and video codec immediately to resolve this issue" as a pop up from a red circle with a cross in it.

After googling, i found lots of "removal tools" and stuff like that, but i'm afraid they'll be viruses as well. Anyone know how to remove this virus specifically?

If not, what do i do next when the scan's over?

(btw, what the hell? I mean, i have the best version of AVG and it didn't find the virus???! What's the point of having it  ??!"

Thanks in advance,
khalaf

Are you scanning in SafeMode?

Download Malwarebytes and Maybe Nod32 as well.

Run each Anti-Virus one after another in SafeMode.

If this fails, please download a HiJackThis log and post it here.

In fairness you did get infected using a CRACK to obtain illegal use of software. I use kaspersky and I've never been happier. Trend Micro wasn't bad either.

Hijackthis log would be helpful as Terry said.

Just finished the scan (which i wasn't running in safe mode), it hasn't detected anything, USELESS! I'll download kapersky & Malware Bytes now, run those in Safe mode, and i'll let u know how it goes, thanks for the help..

EDIT: I'm scanning in safemode now with malware bytes & AVG. NOD32 said "error opening" in command line and stopped the scan for some reason. Kapersky told me to remove AVG which i don't want to do so i didn't install it. I'll post the results when they're done.

SOLUTION HERE:

Ok, so because i had to sit there and watch AVG scan "Race Driver: GRID" installation files knowing it had already scanned the registry and found nothing..I thought i should make use of my time and start googling. So i came across a link (after finding out that the virus's name is "WinCodec Pro")which said to use a removal tool they linked to. Since this was the first hit, it looked ok even though it's risky, so against my better judgement i downloaded it and ran it in safe mode and it worked, the virus is gone. I'm very very surprised that all those anti-virus programmes from well known companies couldn't find the virus and a simple programme deleted it in a matter of seconds very disappointing :erm: ..Anyways, i'm posting the link as a solution to this virus for later reference if anyone else gets it. Thanks for the help everyone. Here's the link.

Hijack this Log PLEASE! Before you do anything else!

I'm thinking you haven't killed the crack.exe process...

Edit:
I see you have fixed it. Well done.

I was about ot say.... NEVER have more than 1 antivirus program on your PC. Thank heavens to kaspersky
Reiterate my point, added to spikeymike guide is that if you deal in piracy and illegal software, you deserve being infected.
What sort of program where you pirating? The more expensive, generally worse the worms that live in it

1. Hijackthis log at www.hijackthis.de (this may not help finding the problem but gives you a far better analysis than you can possibly hope for here)
2. Go to a proper support forum (techsupportguys), only saying this because your antivirus failed hence it is quite a severe one IMO
3. Follow from then on and use everything in safe mode, stuff like combofix etc..

pft, after much use, i can kind of tell which cracks/keygens are actually real :p:

(note: cracks/keygens used for research only, and not actual use of the program)

Could've used that kind of feeling before i got myself into this mess  Never again :yep: ...

I have One question though, i scanned the crack before i opened it and AVG said it's clean, why? When i double clicked, i got 2 pop ups from AVG & "Identity Protection" warning me about the virus. Why did it only pick up after it was too late?

hmmm
i find that if it is a virus, as soon as it starts to download, norton detects it and removes it. if it downloads and isnt removed, usually il just run it and see what happens:p:
oh, and finding the crack from a reputable person helps

I might have to change Antivirus, AVG didn't tell me anything when i downloaded it, and neither when i actually scanned it, i mean what more attention does it need for it to spot the virus???! Crappy software  Like i said, learnt from the experience, never again will i download a crack, just serials :ninja:
