Hi,

Could someone please explain the terms: Kinetic Stability and Thermodynamic Stability (Edexcel Chemistry Unit 2) and the factors which affect them.

Thanks

Ah...my very exact exam board (i.e. the cruel one)

Kinetic Stability: If a reaction is kinetically stable, it has a high activation energy and no molecules possess sufficient energy on collision to react.
Thermodynamic Stability: the enthalpy level of products is much higher than the enthalpy level of the reactants. Thus substances on left-hand side of a very endothermic reaction are thermodynamically stable relative to those on the right. Vice versa.

I don't think there's anything on the syllabus that suggests we need to know about the factors which affect these.

Really? Who would you say is the worest exam board? I, personally, can't see anything worse that the horrible synoptic paper which requires students to know all 2 years of work!
