Maybe it's worth a go, but have you seen a professional counsellor or anything? That should perhaps be your first port of call.

If there are reasons for why you are upset then I don't think that you should be trying to stop yourself crying, you should be trying to deal with why you are upset. My personal opinion is that you should go and see someone such as a counsellor as they can help you deal with the things that are upsetting you. However, only you know how you feel and if you think that hypnotherapy may help you then by all means give it a go. Some things take a long time to deal with and people cope with things in different ways.

You should also bear in mind the things that are worrying you and the fact that your mum will, by the nature of what you are suggesting, be the one who hears all of it. If you are ok with that then that's fine, but I feel it may but her under more pressure than she normally would be with patients, and also more pressure knowing all the things that are making you upset. However, if you are comfortable with that then that's fine

Firsly, bear in mind the things that I posted in my second post.

Secondly, I'm not really familiar with hypnotherapy and what it does, my mum has had it a couple of times, she said that it just makes you really relaxed and I suppose then you can open up. The other thing you could do is to try a different counsellor? It may just be a case of finding someone you feel able to talk to. In my opinion, talking to someone face to face would be the ideal solution, so maybe try that again first?

Did you mum offer you the hypnotherapy or was it your idea? EDIT: sorry, your friend's mum

i have been hypnotised twice last year by my uncle who's a psychiatrist & hypnotherapist. hynotherapy does not neccessarily work on everyone, some people might find it very useful, some (like me) might find it completely useless and no effect whatsoever.

hynotherapy is basically a way of going into your subconscious mind through relaxing yourself slowly. it was used on my cousin by my uncle because she was extremely depressed over her mom (my aunt - who was in a mental institute for about an year after her divorce). it was used to find out her source of depression and "untie this knot" in her mind (he literally asked her to imagine holding a pair of scissors and cut this string which was tied around her when she was hypnotised) and for her, the session worked very well and she was much more cheerful afterwards.

however, for me it didn't make a difference. i was suffering from depression and severe eating disorder, but after both sessions (each lasted about an hour) i didn't feel any better and i was still binging badly. after each sessionm i just feel like i had fallen asleep and just woke up from a dreamless sleep, but afterwards when he repeats some of the things he said during the session, i would be able to recall those quotes. it felt very strange. 2 sessions were not enough, but he had to go back to australia, and that might have been a reason why it didn't affect me at all.

but according to my uncle, hypnosis only works well on people who have a "weaker" state of mind so the subconscious thoughts can be more easily manipulated. whereas for people like me who have a very strong control over my mind, it's very hard to affect my subconscious thoughts. it's like cracking an egg and crack a rock. (poor analogy...sorry!!)

if you wanna give it a shot, there's no harm. but don't except too much from it, and if like me, hypnosis doesn't really help you, don't be too disappointed. if it really doesn't work, you might wanna consider seeing a psychiatrist, and medication if neccessary. i don't know what your depression is caused by, but i'm not on an SSRI (seritonin re-uptake inhibitor) which has very little side effects and is working well for me. if you really do take medication in the future, make sure the drugs are not addictive / makes you sleepy (if you ahve school), ie. valium.

i hope hypnosis would work for you if you do try it. feel free to PM me if you have anything else to ask. cheer up dear.

I'd be more inclined to go with someone who didn't know me so well, or my family, just incase I maybe spouted things that I really oughtn't to - but thats your decision - maybe if your family and family friends know what's going on, they can try to rectify things they might have done to upset you.

good luck.

oh yeah...i forgot to mention that as well. you should try and avoid having psychiatric treatments from your close family members just in case you have some things you don't want them to know, or for hypnosis, you might "choose" to shut off the part of your mind that is the key of your depression just because it's something you don't want your mom to know. and a lot of times, because you family members would be emotionally attached to you, they might be slightly biased towards their own judgements and that can affect your treatments as well. of course it might feel safer to be treated by your mom, but just bear in mind that it would have an effect on the treatment.
