Hair Loss

My hair has been falling out for ages now, every time I have a shower, hair comes off on my palms when I wash my hair, nothing over the top, but there are hairs on my hands so I'd say I lose about fifty hairs every time I shower. Also my pillow gets hairs on it too, not a great deal, but still some. It didn't really bother me as my hair used to be really, really thick, it still is thick but not as much as before and now, at the sides of my forehead my hair line has begun to recede a little and I'm getting worried as my dad started going bald very early and he used to have very thick hair too.

I've tried lots of things, I was presribed this grey, plastic-smelling shampoo a year or so ago for dandruff, which has since cleared up naturally, but it didn't stop my hair loss. I've also had my hair very short and cut on a regular basis but I still lose as much. Do you think I'm going bald, or is this just natural? My GP doesn't seem to treat it as a real issue so I haven't asked to have anything presribed since I stopped using that shampoo ages ago.

Is it all over or in patches?

I'm not sure, its not really noticeable exactly which part of my head its coming from, I'd guess it was from all over really, but I think the top of my scalp at the back, on both sides is probably the worst area maybe, or maybe its just more noticeable there? You can't really tell that I'm losing hair, as my hair is thick and apart from the receding hair line its not noticeable except to me, but I'm quite worried as if I keep losing hair this fast surely I won't have much left in a few years :frown: .
If your father lost his hair, it's almost certainly male pattern baldness.

There's nothing you can do, that is the frustrating part, but you are *deffinetly* not on your own.

Chin up <- easy to say I know .. :-(

Oh  :frown: .

I really hope that isn't the case, I don't want to go bald, my dad still has hair and is nearing fifty years now, but he's had a bald patch for at least twenty years if not longer.

I thought that hereditary baldness comes from your mothers side i.e look at your grandfather rather than your dads side. Or did I dream reading that somewhere.

If thats the case then my grandfather, and all of my mom's male relatives don't seem to have the problem at all, or maybe its because they live in a hotter climate? My mom does lose a lot of hair too, although there's been no noticeable loss in her hair overall, if you know what I mean, whilst mine has gone from very thick to mildly thick.
I lost hair after going through a lot of stress. It stopped eventually.

I lose ridiculous amounts of hair in the shower - apparently you're supposed to lose around 100-150 a day.

true, but w/ MPB, the hairs grow back, thinner and thinner, until, well, you get bald patches.. yep.

Thanks for the shampoo name, will ask GP whenever I can get an appointment for  . Should I say that I've already tried this by borrowing it off a friend, and it worked, or should I tell the truth, because my GP isn't exactly the kind of person who'll think "Ah okay, I'll presrcibe that instead of what I originally gave you."

Or does anyone know if you can actually buy the shampoo?

well you can just go to the chemist and buy it i think if not just say you tried it and you seemed to have improved and then at least you get to try
They can't give that stuff to you without prescription though. So you can get that from the doctors, or coconut shampoo is meant to work, but is obviously not going to be as effective.
