I just got a phonecall from college saying I need to do my personal statement before they can do a reference and that it would be better to apply online. They want to know what I did in the year I was out of education for though (I left in 2004).

I didn't do anything, just had a few part time jobs not for very long. I have and had then anxiety and was too scared to do a lot of things. I still have it now but I'm in therapy/training to manage it. So help me guys what do I say?

How long exactly were you 'doing nothing' for? You could always say you went travelling...?

Gah dear God no! Don't lie..

Just.. be economical with the truth.

Can't you say that you spent the year working in order to stabilise your finances in preparation for University and that, to this end, you thought it better to stay living at home. You could also say that you wanted a break from strict academia to allow you to read around your subject at more leisure (you've still got time to read a few books before you get as far as interview or whatever..!)

I hope some of that made sense. No idea why I'm not in bed. I blame the coffee.. mmm.. coffee.

Well okay what are you applying for? What subject? Did you do anything vaguely pertaining to that subject at all?? If you did work experience you can basically say it took ages to organise

    Thanks guys. Especially Spin

I want to do Business/Business Studies and any of its other incarnations. Or maybe Journalism but not sure since my gf went crazy on me and doesnt want me studying in her town...plus I'd have to write two different personal statements and I dont know how I'd fit that on the form.

I did work experience when I was 14, at a small graphic design business and learnt a bit of how it worked (there were four people there including me, lots of phonecalls, orders etc, talk about the cost of stock etc).

I've had a few part time jobs since then and been for interviews but with me not getting in for about two of them and thinking everyone is better than me, it didnt work out. So I'm saying I havent had a job on the form...its not that fatal is it?

There's a gap of a year on my form (between leaving school and starting sixth form) and the universities I applied to didn't ask any questions...you should be ok.
