Ptosis/ droopy eyelids....

Okay, well, this is embarrassing :woo:

For a few years now I've had one eyelid bigger than the other. And it's bloody annoying (for the record, no I'm not Asian).

Having googled a fair bit I've established it's ptosis... as far as I can tell, where one eyelid 'droops' and the other one is normal.

My question is, has anyone else suffered from this and have they had it corrected, what does it involve etc? I know it's only a small thing but it is quite annoying.

Paris Hilton actually suffers from it too but unlike her 1) it wasn't eyelid surgery that gave me my weird droopy one, I presume it's just random muscle weakness and 2) I don't have all the money I want to sort it out.

Spoiler

Cheers for any info.

I think its more common than people think to be honest. And a lot of people dont notice it on others. Would you say yours is that noticable?
If yours is muscle weakness, or just a naturally droopy eyelid, its not the same thing. Although the fact that you havnt had it all your life might mean theres a cause for it, and its temporary? :dontknow:

And a lot of really pretty people have it - look at Penelope Cruz and Emily Blunt. It doesnt make a difference to them, Im sure you look fine

EDIT : I also dont understand why being asian might make a person likely to have this? Is it common with asians?

Why don't you go to the doctor. He may be able to help you, give you muscle exercises or something? (I'm making this up) Anyway there might be a fairly easy way to fix it. Why might you have been asian? Is it particularly common in asians or something?

I have this...I hate it! It's not massively noticeable all the time, but if I'm tired you can see it, and in pictures all the time it is AWFUL! It stands out so much in pictures, it makes my whole face look weird - I only like a picture of me if I cover that side of my face up!

You can have a form of blepharoplasty done, and if it's only a minor droop I think they only need to lift it up with a stitch or two, you can have it done under sedation. I'm contemplating it, but am just worried it could end up worse than it already is...

I feel exactly the same and I have the identical problem with pictures haha.

It must be so expensive to have that procedure though. I have no idea whether it would be a good idea or not

You could enquire about how much it would cost, what it would involve etc...a proper blepharoplasty would be about £3-4000, but correcting an eyelid droop wouldn't involve as much surgery and would be a much shorter operation I think, so the price could go down quite considerably. Ring a few cosmetic surgery hospitals and see if you could talk to a surgeon about it, but don't go to any that charge you for the consultation! If it's really getting you down it might be worth it in the long run, so you wouldn't feel self-conscious any more. I don't know of anyone that's had it done but if I find anything interesting out I will let you know!

I have this too! And I'm the same, mine is worse when I'm tired. I've spent many hours analysing it in the mirror, taking pictures of myself etc... to try to figure out how to make it look better, but I think the only thing you can do (besides surgery) is to just open your eyes a bit wider whenever someone's taking a picture of you. Not so wide that you look crazy, just alert! Or take pictures with the right side of your face facing the camera (my droopy eye is my left one).. this seems to work for me. Do some experimenting

Muscle exercises from the doctor also sounds promising... I'll go ask mine one day!

I always knew about Paris Hilton's eye, but it's hardly ever noticeable really, which is encouraging. I never knew Penelope Cruz or Emily Blunt had it... I think Mila Jovovich might have it too? But all those kinda prove that it's not as noticeable as we might think.

edit: Just thought I'd add a link -http://inyourface.freedomblogging.com/files/2008/07/penelope-cruz-051708-c-450p.jpg - you can hardly even tell, really.

edit (again) - OP, just looked at your profile pic and I can't see it AT ALL :s-smilie: Which eye is it?? And after reading about Paris Hilton's eye, she got surgery to try to correct it and messed it up even more.. so I would say leave well alone!

I believe there are products out there that help with this. I found this one that looks like it could help: Eye Magic Eye Lift (www.eyemagic.net). It looks like the product includes clear strips to hold back the droopy eyelid and uses a gel to allow repositioning. Lots of good testimonials and some good pictures and video too.

Hope this helps!

I think that Eye Magic thing is more for older people for whom the skin above their eyes has started to sag, kind of eclipsing their eyelids, rather than for people who have one eyelid that covers more of the eye than the other. But it's still interesting to see, so thanks!

I have Ptosis on both eyes and was born with it. I am now 16 and went under Ptosis Surgery at the age of 10. The surgery involved the surgeon removing muscle from my left thigh and going through the forehead to tighten the new muscle. My ptosis was very severe as it was affecting my vision and if left my eyelids would have drooped to the extent where I would have not been able to see.

My ptosis surgery didn't go how planned, I am left with asymmetrical eyelids which I constantly get bullied for. Although I can see, it has not helped the taunting. I am constantly being told that I look asian and being asked what my ethnic background is although I am fully Scottish. Also, my eyelids swell up, they don't close properly which actually means that I sleep with one eye open unfortunately. The appearance is horrible and when I asked if the surgeon could correct the failure I was told it wasn't allowed as it could cause blindness if the eye is exposed too much because the cornea would dry out.

To be honest, embrace what you have, because sometimes undergoing surgery will only make you more self concious. I'm sure you look perfectly fine, and if you are anything like me then it'll only be you who sees the bad in your eyes. I hope this helps and just learn to love your eyes

OP,

I had this problem in the past. One day while having my hair cut, I was staring at the mirror and noticed the difference between the two eyes. Was shocked and did not like it at all. So, I did the most logical thing, which was to raise the eyebrow of the eye that looked droopy. I kept doing it and it became a habit. After a few months, the "droopiness" was gone. Both eyes look the same now. True story.

That's great if you can raise one eyebrow :P I can't. I looked at the price of surgery and it's out of the question (about £3000). I'm going to look up eye exercises now... Do you reckon an eye patch would work? Might force me to open my left eye more? It's such an unfortunate problem :frown: I never used to have it but it suddenly appeared and now I look really strange. I'm a musician as well, so people are always filming me perform and when I see myself in the videos I feel really bad :/ I also went from having lovely skin to it becoming super wrinkly really quickly. I don't know what the hell happened to my face! I'm only young :'( :'( :'(

HelloI had Potsis surgery through the NHS for free... I went to the docs and explained it was just a cosmetic thing to me but I felt so self conscious about it - think about people who have nose jobs and boob jobs through the NHS as it's a cosmetic issue!Unfortunately the surgery didn't solve the problem but it did help. Please speak to your doctors and ask if they can refer you for the work for free. You should not have to pay for this.
