how to dye black hair brown?

hey everyone!

i have dark dark black hair. a few years ago i used to bleach it using Boots Bleach to a mid brown, then use a semi permenant to dye it to a chestnut Halle Berry colour. it was going crispy cos of the bleach, so i dyed it black as it has been for 2-3 years. now i want the Halle Berry or Liz Hurley brown again (sort of a chestnut colour). surely there must be a permenant hair dye that doesnt need a prelightner/bleach just to lighten my hair from black to chestnut brown?

i tried 100% Colour in Dark Brown but it ade no difference. in the past i have used Schwarzkopf Narural Colour but that also made no change. i was thinking of using a really light brown to see if it'd work. on the back of the pack, they all say theyll lighten dark hair the same shade as for light hair. but alas my hair stays blackblack

any suggestions for a dye?im not going to the hairdresser. 1)i wil be skint 2)they will make me bald.

I tried to go red from a black/blue colour with some L'oreal stuff but it didn't go over the black/blue at all, despite what the colour chart said at the back :frown:

Maybe the L'oreal stuff was just poo, I'd like to go red without having to bleach first...

You'' need to lighten it first, either using bleach or a "pre-lightener". If you've already dyed it lots it's best to go to a hairdresser

no but i want to get away from two - stage dying, using bleaches etc. there suely must be a way? on the back of many packs it says it will change the colour of black hair. and the 100% colour says it has no need for prelightener.

i see many chinese black and asian people with cool dyed hair, surely they dont all need to bleach first then dye?

and im not talking about the ends of my hair where they ARe dyed black- even my fairly long bits of natural black hair (down to my chin) are still not taking any brown dyes!

Well, if you keep dyeing then bits of the dye will be on your hair even though you can't see it, so you'll have to dye over dye which is harder and gives patchy results.

Wait a while, and then try going a few shades lighter than you want to go.

I would recommend either using a 'rinse' ( It's a bit like semi-permanent dye. If you want a brown shade, opt for a blonde/bronze rinse) or using henna.

you need to lighten it first, simple as that. i had black hair last summer. to get back to blonde i had to bleach it all over (it then went orange) then streak it twice. you could probably get it to look red-black, in which case you'd need a red dye.

I've never tried dying my hair by myself, as i always go to my hairdressers, but my hair naturally is black, and i've had red highlights put in three times and have never once needed to get my hair pre-lightened or bleached. Also at the moment i have a mix of red and copper blonde highlights, which were also done without any bleaching.

the dye has bleach in it... depending on how bright they were, they could have had as much as 12% peroxide in them

No, i don't think so as my mother checked with the hairdresser to make sure there was absolutely no bleach in the dye... my mum's kind of worried about me ruining my hair. The lighter coppery blonde was the lightest i could go without having bleach in the dye, as that wad the colour that my previous red highlights had faded to.

ok folks here's the deal for home hair dying black hair.

i 100% recommend Boots Lightner- gentle and effective. i used it for 2 years. however you will need a semi permenant dye at least over the top as when u re-bleach the roots growing through, where the previously dyed hair meets the roots you get a line of blond where the bleach overlaps. dont use a permenant dye on top you will wreck the hair more. just leave the bleach for 20 mins max, rinse then apply a semi. this also conditions and protects the hair. i did this for 2 years to get light warm brown (think Liz hurley/sam mumba/ darker beyonce colour)hair from black.

anyway im trying to avoiud the monthly 2 step process as it is muy ££££££ and takes a while.

so i foned Garnier (makes 100% COLOUR and NATEA). they said ALL hair dyes are tone on tone and will not lift out enough black pigment to create any colour very different. hell im just looking for chestnut brown. but they said no can do- gotta pre lighten firstado. they said the BLOND/LIGHT BROWN/MOUSEY BROWN dyes will work a bit on black hair to give a dark brown tone as these shades have more bleach.

NEVER rely on the back of the pack- they said it will never give that result unless u bleach the hair first. for ALL dyes over black hair.
