Do we need to go to university to become successful ?

Ok, so i've basically messed up on the whole for my A-levels. Needed 3A's to get into Law and that is not happening, clearly.

We get told and fed this whole idea that we'd be failures if we don't graduate with a good degree in something. To what degree is this actually true? I want to separate fact from fiction here and i just need some answers.

I do admit that a primary factor for me going for Law is that it is financially lucrative... I want to be rich and Law seems the most obvious option to help me achieve that in the future as a launch pad or a career.

However, how hard is it to become rich and successful without getting a degree? Getting a degree does not guarantee a job as its widely known amongst graduates. So why is University so hyped?

I just don't know what i'm going to do with the next few years of my life to be honest, its baffling.

Plenty of people around without a degree who manage to become successful. By the way, there are loads of jobs around that probably do not need a degree yet earn a hell of a lot more that a career in law would.

Can't you just do some retakes in January (that'll be your last to do it)? Reapply, maybe to a less pretigious/competitive, and still do the law thing?

You don't need straight As to go to a decent uni, get a decent degree, and still have a rich life by going down the education route, y'know.

I'd like to know what these careers are... thanks.

Look at entrepreneurs!

Lots of money - I can imagine many of them never went to Uni.

My boyfriends dad sells carpets, always has, and he is quite financially well off. If you're good at it and can make money from it, then great - you don't always need a degree for that though.

You don't need to go to uni to be successful, though it does help. However, with the economy the way it is, jobs are pretty scarce all round.

I'm sure you're just being pessimistic about your grades! :p:

No, although it does increase your chances. There are still lots of routes you can take to achieve success besides going to uni.

Sometimes, people who haven't gone to uni end up more successful anyway.

Just look around you, look at society and your answer is there..there are plenty of successful people who didnt go Uni

Alan sugar and richard branson didnt go uni
anything is possible if you are motivated

It depends in what way you're planning to become successful. If you're planning to bea successful businessman, sportsman, performer, artist... then no, you don't need uni to be successful. If you want to be a successful doctor, lawyer, or in a white-collar profession, then yes, you'll probably need uni for that.

Have a look at the top 10 richest people of the world...most of them are college/uni dropouts....but I guess you can argue that they had a really good idea to being with...

it was possible 10-20 years ago. Basically impossible now. Hard luck.

Do we need to go to university to become successful? No. Some examples? Richard Branson, Alan Sugar.

Do we need to go to university to get a good job? No, but it is a LOT harder without a degree.

Summary: If want to get rich through employment, probably best to get a degree. If you want to run your own business, then screw university - but even then it is a good thing to fall back on.

One of my mates dads didn't do a degree and has worked all over the world as a boss for a tax company. He's constantly travelling and currently living and working in New York. In fact, i'm going over there in 2 weeks! But this is a prime example of how becoming a success isn't dependant on the obtaining of a degree.

Why shouldn't you do a degree? Your type of thinking is very all or nothing.

You don't need the uni stuff to become successful ... But like myself you might want to go back at a later date to push yourself further ... Not going isn't a barrier or an issue but it can open many doors ... Don't worry about it, press on with your life and all will be good. It's just that you may need to work a bit harder than others.

Off-shore work will start you off on more than someone who may be 5years into working with a degree...
