Linguistics at UCL

First of all, sorry if this seems to be a repeat of earlier threads. I did search for similar threads on the subject of Linguistics, but they were all dated, and pretty general, so I'd prefer if this wasn't deleted.

I'm just wondering if anyone is doing this at the moment? I'm seriously considering this, grades permitting, as I noticed that the offers that are accepted are as low as ABB. Have people applied for this course and got in with these grades, or do you generally need higher?

Also, what do people think of the course? Are there generally smaller groups (as seems to be the case with most unis), or are groups actually larger at UCL?

Thanks,

Jon.

I've heard that it's a very boring degree. Science and that's it.

I'm a Speech Sciences student at UCL and we share a building with the Linguistics students. I've heard from them that it is the most accelerated Linguistics degree in the country!

That's encouraging, though what do you mean by "accelerated"?

That's the term they used - I interpret it as tough and demanding! ( But as it's UCL no doubt extremely respected)

Is the UCL Linguistics degree pretty focused on neurolinguistics? Reading about the modules it seems that way.

Yeah, it seems to be  I really wasn't keen on question 5 of their Linguistics questionnaire at first for that reason, but I did it in the end! How did you find the questionnaire?

It was foul! You may think you've covered these points in your personal statements, but don't worry, our questions are really specific! Er, in what way exactly is 'why do you want to study Linguistics?' specific?! Pah!

OK, I'm done venting. (I just checked my email and found I passed - I've been invited to an Open Day on the 2nd!)

Are these offers you've received that you're talking about?

I have as well! It's a bit short notice, though ... I live in Devon. Grrr. And I'm already off to Cambridge less than a week after that. I'm worried that if I decide to go to the February one instead, they won't give me an offer. :frown: It says they expect to make an offer to all applicants who attend this particular Open Day...

Yikes.

EDIT: Is the Open Day instead of an interview?

Hello, fellow linguists! I'm considering reapplying for linguistics at UCL, but I don't want to risk loosing my place at King's and not getting as many offers as last years cycle. I posted a thread about my situation, but it hasn't had much of a response.

I'll post the link here. I would really welcome your advice on what to do. My Dad is being incredibly unsupportive about the whole idea and saying that "it's the biggest risk of my life" and that I'm being "stupid and pushing it too far". :frown:

I was invited to an Open Day at UCL, but that's not a definite offer. Otherwise, I'm not exactly sure what you mean...

I don't know! I thought we were all going to get an interview, but the timetable for the day doesn't mention that, does it? So I have no idea. I'm a little concerned in case we have a surprise one. :frown:

If it's the same as the open day I went to it literally is just an open day/tour thing - no interview. As long as you attend you're guaranteed an offer as far as I'm aware, I think these things are just there to make sure you know what the course entails and so that they know you aren't crazy or something.

That was exactly what I meant. ^^

And I got my first offer from Leeds last week, but I've heard nothing from UCL apart from an acknowledgement a couple of weeks ago. I'm probably going to get rejected anyway.

Did you not get the Linguistics questionnaire, then? They should have sent that to everyone.

What did people think of the Open Day? I couldn't make it, but I've been told I'll get invited to another one in February, so that's not too bad. I really wanted to go to the Generative Grammar lecture!

If you're referring to me then, nope, I haven't. That probably means I'm going to be rejected then!

The Open Day was really goo, actually! I went on the properly 'open' Open Day, in July, so I didn't think there'd be much that was new to it, but we went on a tour round the Student Union and the theatre and so on. And it poured with rain but it was still good to see non-Linguistics-related things.

I only got there for the second lecture, but the people who were at the first one said it was crazy-hard, being eight weeks into the term and no one there quite as good at generative grammar as the actual students! The other one, on stresses and tones, wasn't half as hard. And it was pretty fun, cool as that sounds... :p:

I hope you have a good time in February, yesterday was a really good day. :o:

they said they would make me an offer but I haven't heard anything since... getting kind of worried that they've decided they don't want me anymore....

hey wassup
i applied for the same sorta corses you did! (the kcl, ucl and york one). i sent off the questionnaire (on the day of the deadline) and they told me they'd be in touch 2nd week of january 2010.

i hope the course isn't boring, sounds kinds interesting/intelligent/useful. i wanna go into sorta media/journalism/publishing kinda **** and thought Linguistics would be a good idea, seeing as I HATE shakespear and heavy literature and i'M amazing at sciences, youknow.

most of all, i'm more concerned about social aspects of ucl/london, anyone have anything to say?

Anyone else received their offer yet? I got mine yesterday  Slightly surprised as I haven't yet attended the Open Day!
