Could any body please advise me the correct usege of the helping verbs in this scenario?

And why?

Who ___________ TV last night when the doorbell rang?

1.. was watching
2.. were watching

The first answer is correct. Why? Because "who?" is generally considered to be singular (at least
grammatically) unless it is clear from teh context that the "who?" refers to more than one person,
e.g. "Who were those people you were sitting with last night?"
