So Bilawal Bhutto got in by family connections then????His mother and his grandfather were both undergraduates and he is destined to be a major political figure in Pakistan maybe even prime minister!!!!If he is a bit dim with normal grades how is he in oxford??? I know no one without an intimidating surname can get into oxbridge with these credentials!!!

To say oxford and cambridge don't accept by family connections is just wrong!!!!U have a clear advantage is you have 'significant political liasons'.In todays much advanced world where the common man has gained the protection and rights he deserves as a human being is this even fair????Iam flabbergasted that such blatant elitism is happeining in democratic britain!!

Calm down. If you took care to read properly, all Lonely Goatherd said was that she had heard other people say that Bilawal seemed not to have gotten in on merit and appeared thick. That's a far cry from hard evidence, so I wouldn't go stating it as fact

As Craggy's pointed out, I've heard that he seems to be thick. I've never met the guy myself, so I can't say. Chill!

I guess the person to ask would be his tutorial partner. I daresay I come across as a complete ditz outside my tutorials :awesome:

I honestly don't think Oxford or Cambridge need to admit "bigshot political goliaths" for advertising purposes. Oxford is really famous enough as it is, Bilawal or no Bilawal, and if they want a publicity boost, there'll be much better methods.

I've never heard of Bilawal, so as an advertising method it is not that effective.

On the other hand, I have heard about Oxford's first class reputation, academic excellence and history...

I feel bad contributing to this thread because, by rights, it should have died long ago, but there are perhaps political advantages (and potentially financial advantages) in having the future president of Pakistan attending your university.

Fair enough. But that's still not the same as saying Christ Church took him to "advertise themselves". They're hardly going to raise their profile by accepting people on the basis that they're a member of a largely corrupt political dynasty in a foreign country (and consequently likely to go on and rule that country at some point), rather than on merit. It's a risky business for them, so I can't imagine they'll do it unless the foreseeable benefits are considerable. Publicity-wise, those kind of high-profile students of doubtful academic merit are probably more trouble than they are worth.

Edit: Incidentally, I was terribly disappointed when I found out he wasn't even reading PPP. What a missed opportunity.:frown:
