A set of ten books is arranged in orderly fashion on a shelf. Each book has 100 pages, making 1000 pages in all.A worm starting on the first page of the first book eats through the last page of the last book. How many pages has he eaten?

i heard this one before, can't remember it though.

I think it's normally posed with regards to a set of encyclopedia, and the worm eating from A to Z, how many volumes would it eat through. Ultimately, the same trick (probably).

I am absolutely certain that 802 is the right answer
The first page of the first book is on the right hand side of the book, so there are 99 pages before it, which the worm doesn't eat through. The last page of the last book is on the left hand side of the last book, with 99 pages after it, which the worm doesn't eat through. I have rewritten this so many times and can't get it to make any sense. Go and look at a bookshelf!!

Why do you think it's wrong? What do you think the answer is?
