hey ive graduated with a low 2.2 and was wandering if i would have a chance to study MA International relations at the school of diplomacy?

would i be able to get in with a low 2.2?

would they accept me with a low 2.2 law degree

Well you have been told to arrange a phone meeting with the director to help your odds. If you don't set up some form of meeting to display your apparent interest and motivation, i imagine not.

-The fees are steep, but they do seem excellent at getting jobs for their graduates

Oh I wish I knew this one before I applied. sounds very interesting

I'm considering it more and more, as it does seem to place people in great IR jobs

What about the Graduate Institute of International and Development studies in Geneva, looks pretty good to me.. Although I just want to go there because Kofi Annan did... Also the fee's are basically nothing :yep:

I don't know French at all :frown: . Maybe I'll visit the campus when I'm out in Geneva. Do you know how these two schools compare?

EDIT: the courses look great and their reputation seems solid. It says we need "at least a passive knowledge of french," so I wonder if I could bang that out the summer before classes start-the tuition is incredible

That's my worry about it as well, but it says you can sit exams in either language with most courses available in English.

Prestige wise I think the alumni shows you that its pretty amazing for International Relations/Development. Lots of High ranking UN officials and Diplomats.

Also it has exchange programs with Harvard/Yale/Georgetown and I think Oxford

I applied and got an offer for the upcoming term, although i ultimately declined it. If you don't feel you have a passive knowledge of French, you sign a French Language Waiver with your application and attend a week-long course before the beginning of term for the language. This is what I did, although I had thought that the course would be longer than a week and my French ability might've been good enough anyway. I might apply for PhD study there because Geneva is the perfect place for my research.

Hmm, I wonder if signing the waiver would hurt my chances of getting in? I can always not waive it, and spend july/august before the commencement learning French. What was the application like?

Thanks!

Not gonna lie - the application was intense. Lots of stuff in duplicate or triplicate certified copies, three references, ect. But they seemed pretty flexible if/when something is a bit off. The way it's worded on their website seems to indicate that it's slightly harmful to use the waiver, but I got in with one and so do plenty of others, so I don't think it makes a big difference.

Yeah, I was looking at it on this website : http://graduateinstitute.ch/corporate/teaching/admissions/procedure_en.html

I'm wondering about the copies-exactly what does "certified" mean/how do we do it? Also, do you feel that the level of French I could learn in two months of study (lets say 4 classes a week, for 6 weeks-not incredibly intensive) would qualify as "passive knowledge?" I wonder if they test you on this knowledge at commencement? I'm actually getting a really good vibe from the staff there and some former students I have briefly talked to-I want to make sure I get in!

-a 3.77GPA (3.82 within PoliSci major) will be competitive I hope?

I believe a certified copy is just a photocopy that has been stamped/signed by the university. Otherwise you'd spend a fortune on official transcripts! I love the look of this place too..

Its a 2 year degree isn't it?

which is better out of the two- geneva school of diplomacy OR the graduate institute ?

No idea... But, They are both highly-specialised schools of International Relations/Studies focusing on Post-graduate education in an amazing city for such things. Both look pretty amazing and have produced famous graduates.

Yes, the Master in International Affairs in a 2 year (4 semester program). I'm really liking the look of this place.

With the grades I believe you mentioned earlier, I imagine you would have to knock their socks off with personal statements/letters of appraisal to be competitive/gain admittance. However, I could be wrong I have not yet applied myself.

yeah i fully agree. I wanted to know which school is better out of the two- geneva school of diplomacy or the graduate institute

Nope, 4 Year Undergrad degree, so still quite a while to go... I feel like I know what I want to do, just got to finish this first :o:

I've rather accidentally ended up looking at all this stuff.

I'm doing a 4 year undergrad (Denver), but I'm graduating after 3 years and 1 quarter (this upcoming november, started in sept. 2006). Where are you? When do you graduate?
