New start ~ New surname. Ideas?

Poll

Best surname - please post your reasons!

My OH and I are getting married soon: he doesn't want to keep his surname, and I'm not bothered about keeping my surname.

We're moving a long way away soon, and having a new start, so we want a new 'family name' to start our new lives. We don't really have any family/anyone else except each other, so we want to choose a new surname together: one for 'our family' (us two, and any children we'll have in the future).

Any ideas (names or otherwise) much appreciated. We want something unusual but not crazy.

EDIT: We're considering Blake, Winters, Lake and Grace.

Wow, I didn't know you could actually do that... that's awesome!

Do you have any ideas yet? I was thinking you could try a foreign surname (something Polish or Spanish etc) then realised it might seem a little strange, haha. Alternatively you could pick the last name based on someone you and your other half both respect a lot etc

Choose one for your ethnicity, otherwise everyone will think you're Polish or Spanish!

We've been pondering over it for ages, and I thought a little outside input wouldn't hurt, yes. Something someone says on here could get us thinking along a different track, and we could come across a name we both love.

And we only have a few weeks to decide.

What are your first names if you don't mind sharing? Might help us think of something matching...

How about "Hope" ...so inspiring. I'm thinking i'll change my surname too when i'm older.

aww that's a great idea.

Try mashing both your old names together? Not into a double barrelled job, just stick two halves of them together to form a new name or something? If that fails: phone book.

Pick a tree name. Or something from the NATO phonetic alphabet. Or a name relating to a character, like Parlabane or Loxley. I dunno, I'm just saying random things now, probably best not to ask TSR to make this decision for you.

I'm not - just trying to get some outside input, which might help us with our brainstorming.

Rose and Joe Waterworth

You need a 3 or 4 syllable surname to balance and this was the surname of a great friend of mine many years ago - I always though it had class without being too posh.

Apparently children with surnames in the first half of the alphabet do better than those with surnames in the second half. Obviously a huge generalization, but if you are one of those couples that will do absolutely anything to give your unborn children the best start in life (including playing Mozart to your fetus) then pick a name that comes early in the alphabet. Like Alderson if you want something normal, or Beezlebub if you want something that makes you stand out.
You could pick a country or town name.
Also bear in mind that people with a surname relating to a profession are more likely to be in that profession. So if you want a marine biologist for a child, use Fish.
Or you could use your career as a guide. For instance if you are a civil engineer call yourself Bridge. Heehee
