There's a new Tesco Express on Mill Road (other side of the railway bridge from town). It opened a few weeks ago.

I registered with the Cambridge Careers Service the other day. I want to get started with all that stuff relatively early; my logic is that the time at Cam always seems to go so quickly, it'll be relevant before I know it...

Its always so reassuring reading your posts  Most of the time it seems I'm the only person in the world prone to think ahead so much :p:

That is indeed the Tesco of doom. They're apparently trying open a new one on East Road (I think in what used to be Dreams, that bed shop).

Those kind of protests make no sense - if people really didn't want a certain shop in an area, they wouldn't go there when it opens and it would have to close down for being unprofitable.

But certain stores, such as Tesco Epxress, are likely to attract customers from a wider area, significantly more than an independent store would do. The complaints were, and I am merely communicating these and not necessarily backing all of them, that a Tesco Express in that area would increase noise pollution, litter and pedestrian traffic, while potentially abducting business from local independent stores. Seeing as this store would be subsidized by the Tesco brand as it is, it would be unlikely to close (and can undercut prices easily).

Now THAT would be a good place for a Tesco. Although I may be biased because its about 3 minutes from where I work, and cheaper than going to M&S or Boots, and closer than Mill Road.

The new Mill Road Tesco has always looked very deserted when I've been past!

According to the protest website it doesn't have an alcohol licence and it's really small. Also (and I think this sort of invalidates some objections to the presence of a new supermarket) there is a Coop just down the road that has been there for years and is a reasonable size.

I don't really have an opinion on the Tesco thing. When I lived down Mill Road I went to the Coop/the big Sainsburys mostly, so I didn't especially support any independent businesses but I can understand why people sign petitions and things against Tesco - it's nice to have (nice-looking) independent shops, even if you then drive to Bar Hill anyway. Also having a big shop there probably would cause a lot of congestion when loading and stuff because Mill Road is horrible.
Tangentially related question: where would be a good place to go to grab a couple things after arriving? I assume the central Sainsbury's will be horribly busy.

Will you have a car and a patient driver? If so, you could go to the Tesco on Newmarket Road (or Cheddar Lane, to be more precise. This is also within cycling distance and isn't completely unpleasant if you go by the river as much as possible) or there is a huge Tesco in a place called Bar Hill that is west along the A14. There is also a proper Sainsbury's and an Asda but they're less easy to get to than the Tesco. Assuming the 'couple of things' are supermarket type things, that is.

Car, certainly; patient driver is very much in doubt! :o: Thanks, that's really helpful.

There's also a huge Waitrose right next to the Trumpington Park and Ride, if that helps.

If I were you I'd buy everything you can fit into the car before coming, because the first weekend here really will be a giant pain in terms of shopping.

If you don't leave after ten minutes :p:

Is this still my reputation? :p:

If those couple things don't include anything fancy (i.e. only stuff to eat and drink), Aldi and Coop on Histon Road might be worth trying as well, depending on where you're coming from and where you need to go  . Parking should be relatively easy there and it's usually not that crowded. Sainsbury's Central is a horrible place to shop at (except for lazy Trinitarians etc :p: ).

Yeah, I live really near it and it doesn't really sell all that much I want that I cant get elsewhere. Seems to be mostly crisps and fizzy drinks.

Most people still seem to go to the coop, the tescos tends to be pretty empty and there's a really suspicious security guard that puts me off.

Where did you get all your Trek bars from when you went walking? I want lots for my 50km rowing marathon at the weekend. Do Sainsbury's/Tesco's stock them?

There's an Aldi? Yessss, how far is that road from Emma?
I'm going to tesco the afternoon that I arrive to stock up on some things :yep:
