fumble - Post in Ask a Moderator and mark it for mine and Craggy's attention.

craggles - no, I did say in the thread that I could make the saturday but then i'm going home. No one paid any attention so I just left it. I don't really know him anyway so I'm not offended!

I think the Cambridge website should emphasise the importance of reading the college and faculty websites! I'd only read the bit about Emma and the bit on MML on cam.ac.uk, and I discovered everything about Emma afterwards!

Yeh I was the same. But on the other hand, it was probably just as well, because Peterhouse's old site was utterly dire. And fumble's totally right in that having to go into that level of detail over college choice would have put me off entirely.

Going through the process again now that I'm applying for MPhil it was so much easier! I knew what to bother looking at, and what info to skip when going to various college websites. And I also already had a shortlist from having actually spent enough time in Cam.

 I admit that I have never taken much notice of the technicalities on TSR and have no clue what this means!

I saw your posts, but its one of those situations that there's so many people, if it keeps getting adapted to individual arrangements nothing will happen :frown:

I don't think its actually finalised yet. I've been meaning to put up a doodle poll, which I can do now
Hey, I couldn't ask a question here rather than creating a whole new thread?

I am getting a new mobile for going over, but am getting a contract phone. Would 100mins & 3000texts be enough, in everyones experience(more so the minutes, I believe the texts will be fine)? I think it might since everyone will be so close to each other since the rooms are all in halls, but I was just looking confirmation.
Depends entirely on you! If you take a landline handset then you can call other landlines within the uni free of charge.
I have no idea how someone could get through 100 texts a day, but I can imagine getting through 100 minutes on some days (and anyway, 100min means a five minute conversation not even every day). Particularly ringing home say. I'd guess it depends completely on how much you use your phone personally. I can probably train my parents to use skype, but not my gran, for instance.

I'm considering this option with O2 and a cashback co-operative thing. But I don't know if I trust the cashback thing or not. Does anyone have any experience with them?

I've heard from my college parents that this had been discontinued - that might just be Emma only though. I don't understand why enough people wouldn't use it.

:goodnight:
Hmmm my colleges freshers pack made getting a landline handset sound as if only a rare few do so. My family have it set up so I have free calls to them so it would be really use between people at college. I think 100mins would be fine, as I mainly ring people at the minute to confirm things for going out.

My parents have it set up that I get free calls to them, using the Family bolt on, so it would be strictly between people at college. The next option is £10 dearer per month and you are getting 600mins instead

I had a dodgy experience with cash back through a company which went bust :shifty:

I mostly use my phone for texts here. Literally everybody uses facebook and email all the time, so that cuts down on mobile use a bit.

Death has to be my favourite.

"I meant," said Iplsore bitterly, "what is there in this world that makes living worthwhile?"

Death thought about it. "CATS," he said eventually, "CATS ARE NICE."

Since when did Death need quotation marks? :p:

It's all about the city watch for me, especially Vimes, although the Death novels are great too.

Ah ok thanks. Looks like 100minutes will suffice. Also, would I be correct in guessing that the use of particular networks is varied, or is there a more common network? If quite a few people were likely to be on o2 it would be more beneficial for me to not get a contract phone

I don't think there's any particular bias. I always get good reception on 02 in cambridge, whereas I know some people on other networks sometimes complain, which might be a minor thing to think about.

Yeah O2 seems to have good coverage everywhere, plus it has O2 unlimited which I use a lot. Its just I heard the majority of people are unlikely to not be on O2, therefore the O2 unlimited would be fairly useless, meaning I would need to get a contract phone.

Out of interest, do you use a contract with O2 or just pay as you go?

Quoting everybody took bloody ages... :hmpf:

I've been re-reading Pratchett books all summer

:ditto:

I also reread Dune, which was just as mindblowing as it was when I first read it. I also partnered it with Carl Jenkin's The Armed Man on a whim (I don't read books to music much any more) but it fit beautifully.

Also: I just saw on Amazon that there's a new Pratchett out on the 1th of October. Woohoo! :woo:

WHAT?! You have just made my day week month :p:

And I missed PratchettChat  Best characters are in no particular order, Vimes, Vetinari, Death, Weatherwax, Cohen the Barbarian and a few others.

Hah. I sent about 5 texts in my first term and it was only more later on because of CUCB business. I communicate by email and Skype. Which are free (to other Skype accounts obviously).

Dune is ridiculously good. If you want a similar work, have you tried Ursula K. leGuin's The Left Hand of Darkness? It's like Dune, but with snow.

+1 for Dune, and therefore thanks for the suggestion.
