Haha, fair enough. I should probably sleep at some point, knowing that in about five hours the construction work will start again.

The birds have already started screaming, and my family are all early risers without volume control (bear in mind I've not lived here for 5 years) :s-smilie:

Are there any libraries with fiction sections?

The Cambridge Union Library claims to have "the largest selection of borrowable fiction in Cambridge outside the University Library".

Yes please. If you're not likely to need it for awhile :o: I'm very good at getting books back to owners, but I don't always do that particularly quickly (unless I'm asked of course)

Are you going to Drogue's party? Are there any plans with FTB and scarlet yet? I'm thinking of stuffing my essays and going for once. I have another friend's 21st the night after and the Fresher meet the day after, so the weekend's already reasonably wasted

We are planning to go, but can't afford the train - it'd be £64 for both of us to go for the weekend! We'll take the coach- £16 for both for the weekend! Leaving at 14:15 from Cambridge, I think.

Dune is ridiculously good. If you want a similar work, have you tried Ursula K. leGuin's The Left Hand of Darkness? It's like Dune, but with snow.

I love Ursula LeGuin's books. I could have practically drawn a map of Earthsea from memory at one point. And my first crush on a literary character was on Ged...

I like the Left Hand of Darkness too, and most of her fantasy work. Not so keen when she write about the real world though! She's better on imagined worlds.

I just guessed there must be libraries with fiction sections somewhere. How am I meant to know? I am not there yet. Hmm seems I will have to start transporting some books over then

Cambridge Central Library (as in, non-university related town library with proper fiction that you can borrow) has been closed for years. BUT it opens on Tuesday 29th September! Woop!
I love bookshops. New books are my downfall :frown: I've almost filled a suitcase with subjet related books already though-due to a couple of huge english anthologies :s-smilie:

I have a suitcase worth of books... and that isn't even inclusive of text books, seeing as they get replaced every year..
I hate packing. I just have too much stuff, and can't seem to narrow it down, which is ridiculous. By now I should know how many clothes I need!

This is a bit of social relief; I can draw a memory map of both Middle Earth and Beleriand from Tolkien's work .

It was very well paced, I remember; a book I read in about a day, maybe two.

From the sound of the posts on one of the many mailing lists I've never got around to unsubscribing from, the science fiction society seems to have a collection of books members can borrow. .from.
That is so. It is housed in one of the department libraries now, apparently...
Did any of you who row know Ian Thompson? He was Senior Treasurer of CUCBC, great coach and amazing dude in general. He was Dean of Selwyn before he moved to Kings, and he was an important figure in Cambridge rowing. Well, he's just died. Incredibly sad. He wasn't even very old. :frown:
Oh, ****.

Sainsbury's is now open until midnight, Mondays to Saturdays.

This is nice... I really hope they'd change their Sunday opening hours too though, the number of times I have been in the ADC all day and realised I have nothing to eat at 5 past 5...

The main problem with that is the licensing laws, though, and the Sunday Trading laws.

Co-op on Chesterton Road is open until 11pm, every night, and there's also a little newsagent on Bridge Street by Magdalene which is (IIRC) open late too.

Actually, it's pretty clear that there's only one place you ought to go, on a Sunday, with Sainsbury's closed......

Not all that late - I think it closes around 8 or 9 on weekdays, but is probably open for a bit after 5 on Sundays.

Regarding map knowledge: I can't remember any maps from fiction, but can probably sketch out maps of most areas in many computer games without difficulty. Although I suppose that's more understandable.

Thanks Amy, that's brilliant

I'd also investigate the possibility of parking up near Selwyn, which could be a bit of a trek, but it's free!

My only map familiarity would be from the Chronicles of Narnia

:sadnod: We got an email about this this morning. A great shame. He did the memorial ceremony for my dissection course as well as being the college dean.

There's a compline service in King's chapel tonight at 9.00pm in his memory if anyone's in Cambridge and would like to attend and the memorial chapel is open for those who wishes to pay their respects.

Yeah it came as a bit of a shock to me this morning. He was a bit of a dude:frown:
