An old supervisor of mine has put me in touch with someone he taught, who is looking for someone to fill a PhD studentship, after someone else dropped out. Its in an obscure area of building image modelling, that I know very little about but sounds interesting. However, it is in Reading, and although it doesn't require me to move, I would be based there pretty often. The other issue is that I have commitments to my research job in Cambridge, although I have never signed a contract they have been very good to me. I have a week to decide if I want to go for it... eep!

I mean its not every day you get an opportunity like this, but a PhD is not something to be taken on lightly...

:ditto: Well, not quite. A lot of the "misc crap" I had to unpack in order to root out my misc travelling crap and my misc walking crap, so they are all strewn liberally over every surface in my room. I also needed the backpacks, so they were all unpacked. In fact now I come to think of it, the only thing that is still packed is the bag with my duvet and crockery in.

Are you back at college then? How's LSM?

Gah! About to go on holiday with family in the Drakensberg for a few days. Really looking forward to it, but not the 6hours in the car crammed into the back of a golf with loads of baggage :grumble:

Hmmm sounds like me! Every part of my room covered in stuff from university that I unpacked at some point because I needed it, or things like boxes of work which I'm not using but my parents insisted go in my room as they don't want it cluttering up the rest of the house. The odd still half-packed box here and there. I do sometimes wonder if I have two ordinary people's worth of stuff as I pack everything I need to take to uni (that is, fill the back of my dad's car) and my bedroom at home is still full of crap.

I wouldn't do it, especially since it's in an area you don't know much about and assuming you're reasonably happy with how you're set up in Cambridge at the moment. Practically everything can sound interesting before you have to do it. Having to go to Reading often would get pretty annoying/stressful.

Yes, having spent the morning thinking about it, I am increasingly thinking of practical difficulties, both financially and logistically. And I like what I do now... But its not every day that you get sonething like this presented to you, so I am not deciding just yet.
I just love TSR sometimes i just got negged with the comment "whats illegal about peer to peer sharing? Nothing you queer prik." over this post. I'm sorely tempted to become a sub just to find out who it was and neg them back for being quite so stupid!:p:

Yep, I have the same problem. But add to all of that taking more than 10 musical instruments each time...

Not worth doing a PhD for the sake of doing a PhD, I wouldn't have thought. So unless you're pretty sure it's something you actually care about studying it doesn't sound like a great option, nice though it is to have had them make you the offer. Imo.
ARGH.

I hate it when this happens. I have a project to do, which I do not care for and I just can't get on with it in the manner that I should. It's the sort of thing that would have interested me 2 or 3 years ago but seems deathly dull now. I wish I could motivate myself a bit better.

There were things growing on the bathroom tiles and fixtures :s-smilie:

But problem solved, I've moved rooms AND I have a car parking space! Wonders will never cease...

I've spent most of the weekend catching up with people I already know, because Darwin has been dead until this afternoon.

Incidentally, I  Pret wifi.

Oooh that sounds better now- glad it's looking up! How are the freshers at Darwin? Are you living on site now?

I've got to do a ten minute grand-round style presentation on a topic of my choice that's related to my current attachment. I never realised how little information you can actually disseminate in 10 minutes without it being overkill. Stupid me for picking a large-ish topic, even if it's bloody interesting. I had an awesome presentation prepared for last week, but didn't go through with it in the end as 2 other people came up with the same topic and were going to present before me... Ah well, at least I'm getting the hang of making presentations.

Brilliant! Are you living with the other people from S?

I finally managed to gather the will power earlier to set straight some confused applicants in the Architecture thread...

But it is true - there's nothing inherently wrong with P2P technology. What is illegal is using it to share copyright material. (Analogously, there's nothing wrong with knives; what is illegal is using it to murder people.)

I know! My point was I had never suggested it was illegal but merely, as a fellow DC++ user and given their likely use of it, that they should be a bit more circumspect about discussing their network- I certainly hadn't said anything that was worthy of being negged or insulted for :yep:

Amy: I didn't read your post properly. I was just packing up my computer leaving for the Berg this morning, and just saw the words 'studentship' and 'PhD' :p:

Internet doesn't work properly here :hmpf: It seems that the 3G device only works properly when there's no cloud cover. Which is fine in Pretoria, where my family live, but rubbish in the mountains and Cape Town which are unusual. So yeh... chat doesn't work and pages take ten mins to load

I'm finding myself starting to believe some of this stuff audiophiles go on about.... (I'd always dismissed most of it as ********, much like literary and art criticism and the like). But having for various reasons tried all the combinations of computer and soundcard / sennheiser headphones / ipod / sony earbuds in the last couple of days, it really is amazing how different the same song can sound on each. Like, iPod + headphones sounds totally different to computer + headphones, which both sound totally different to iPod + earphones...

Just thinking out loud :p:
That G20 person has an unfortunate name. :frown:
i'm trying to convince some applicants in the Architecture thread that the numbers game doesn't work. Could do with some backup, as they don't seem to believe me, if anyone's bored!
