I had to do the GRE for Cambridge but I think it's basically only economics and judge (that I know of) that ask for it.
You'll find that the MPhil admissions process isn't as bad for you because you're actually here(this is what I am lead to understand from people in my class), people (like me) who didn't do their undergrad here tend to sweat the small stuff whereas you will have a much greater understanding of what's going on, and you'll also have the advantage of being able to call in in person if there's a problem.
Athena
And internal applicants don't have to send in everything in triplicate, if you want to stay at your undergraduate college you're pretty much guaranteed able to, you can go and speak to potential supervisors/admissions staff really easily...

Well yeh. I kind of predicted that being asked to supply documents to people in an office a stone's throw from my accommodation, in the same department as the copier I'd be using can't present too much of a challenge. Also they might not like phone calls, but aren't going to say no to a knock on their doors and a smiling face :awesome: As I'm in Cambridge over the summer, I'll be able to do all of this really easily.
But reading other peoples' experiences is at least useful in terms of not panicking if the BOG take months to reply to everything and so on...

I'm bloody knackered :stickyman: I've been helping out at an Open Day all day. It wasn't particularly trying, except that walking to and fro around college grounds for the whole day, including the hottest parts, has really tired me out!

The pesky barbecuers haven't emerged just yet, so I think this is fantastic opportunity to go to the garden and flop with my book under the tree

Or... alternatively... first year Engineer results day?

The biggest piece of advice I can give you is to apply really early - as soon as your stuff is together, get it in. This is especially true if you want to change college.

Thanks, and don't worry I have to anyway. My DoS told me that I have to submit my application this September if I want to be considered for a University studentship, so yeh... :s-smilie:

Sorry :frown: If it's any consolation, I won't be going near the class lists for any subject but my own next year and won't be taking any pictures or anything.

It's okay really - I don't have anything dire to be ashamed of really, it's just the principle I don't like!

Yeah that's the wost part about it, although, I was lucky, didn't really have any of those incidences.

Ah bugger, 2:2. Not low enough to make me really question what I'm doing, but low enough for college to have a go at me. Haven't got breakdown yet, but I'm guessing that Structures brought me down from a 2:1.

Peterhouse wise, we have 4 firsts, two 2:1s, three 2:2s and two thirds.

What, in engineering? There can't be that many of you :lolwut:

Maybe they got rid of SPS to try and squeeze in more engineers :p:

Just did the last of the Open Days. Got drenched to start with, but the temperature was nice after that, which made a good change. Loads of the people I showed round the college (particularly parents) seemed massively enthusiastic about college. Particularly the Deer Park, library and hall. It was slightly annoying getting the impression that it was more the parents choosing the college than the child...

I'm glad TSR is pretty dead at present, as I need to make a start on the Dissertation of Doom tomorrow :afraid:

Glad someone else noticed that, I thought it was just me! And yes, pushy parents on open days are a nightmare. I went to the Oxford open day alone, and while my mum came with me to the Cambridge one, she didn't go round colleges with me.

I feel very blonde, but is it Emmanuel or Darwin you'll be at? Darwin, right?
And when do you move to Cam? Sept?

Hmm...
I have this room dilemna for next year. I might be able to go for a pretty old one in Old Court, but the chances are that they may force me to move to a different room during the Christmas and Easter vacs, which is a huge task with all the stuff I have :frown: Or I could just go for a functionally nice room out of college which they won't need to move me from. There's the hostel on Trumpington street which has single sets which looked nice.
However today they opened one of the old court rooms as an example for the open day tours, and I fell in love with it :coma: It had antique furniture and and old wooden bannisters and beams and it overlooked the Deer Park :coma: :coma: :coma:

So now I'm tempted to be impractical.

Additionally one of the postgrads living in this house is evidently neurotic. She just printed out an article about some serial killers in Scotland torturing and murdering students, and wrote 'please close all windows etc before leaving the house' in big red pen placing it on the kitchen table
Of course nevermind that we live next to the police station...

I hate moving with a fiery passion, so I would pick a convenient room - but I've never been especially bothered about living in an old college room, I like my rooms to be practical rather than pretty, with good facilities (kitchens that actually have ovens, bathrooms with showers not scummy baths that the scouts clean infrequently...)

Yeh, I know alot of people would probably just go for the practical solution.
Although in terms of facilities its all exactly the same. The only houses in college with ovens are in Parkside, which I have no desire at all to move to. The rest of college all has hobs. Nowhere is without showers. Actually I prefer baths. I'm really frustrated by living in a house this summer without one... for the first time too! Luckily our bedders do clean them regularly. The other thing is there's never anywhere that has a bath without a shower, so nobody ends up using the bath except me which means it stays very clean
why is it that the evening i set aside to ring old friends, having arranged with a couple at least that i would be calling, noone, not one, picks up. :hmmm:

How friendly are you with your domestic department? If you go see them a couple of weeks before christmas/easter holidays they may be able to avoid putting people in your room over the holidays...
And I had a similar type of dilemma, in that I could have gone for the same room that I had this year, which was large, cheap, had an actual kitchen, and was great to get things delivered to, but was a bit isolated; or a nice set in college proper, which I haven't had before.. I went for the room in college, because when would I have the chance again?!

Haha.. you should find a return article about a serial killer using poisonous gases or something, and the importance of ventilation... :p:

Because everybody else is really busy, and its only us.... which is a strong indication we have no lives :p:

I think the hearts of the rooms coordinator sinks every time she sees me approaching her office :p: I've had discussions with them almost every holiday. Usually involving my cajoling them into wavering some or other procedural norm on my behalf. So yeh, I'm not holding my breath. Also they're really stubborn and like making arbitrary rules. I was forced to move out of my term room into my holiday room three days before my two friends in the same house graduated. They got to stay. None of the rooms were being used. And then ironically.. the guy who was living in my holiday house as his term-time residence was put in the same accommodation I was forced to leave when he needed accommodation for a choir tour!

yeah, that doesn't help, but none of the people i called are avid party-goers, and at least two promised that they would be in. Plus its my only night off from rowing! Ah well, i tried, and they may well call back later.

Yeh that is annoying. But they should have missed calls on their phones, so the ball's in their court, and its an opportunity for you to get on with something else you might need/want to do.

Besides, I have an excuse in that I am catching up on recent music developments and looking up law firms/chambers and considering applying... but then realising that there's no point..

stuff about inefficiency of room swapping
