What sick and twisted logic lies behind the fact that plugging my phone in to charge causes it to come off vibrate and onto ring?

Presumably because it won't be in your pocket, so having it on vibrate would be pretty useless, as you wouldn't hear it.

Which makes sense in theory, but in practice if you put the phone down on a solid surface, it'll amplify the sound made by the vibration. But it'll probably still be less intrusive than an actual ringtone.

Yeah, I know. But you might not put it on a hard surface  And I have had my phone vibrate in my pocket before and me not notice it...
Went to the "freshers' meet and greet" in college where current students meet the freshers and freshers meet each other. It made me feel old. But kinda glad that I don't have the whole craziness of being a fresher and not knowing anybody to go through again.

I've been spending a fair bit of time with our college's new freshers, helping them to settle in - but I agree with thefish_uk, I wouldn't want to be a fresher again either!

On shoe related news, I impulse bought yet another pair today, taking the total (in Cambridge) to 12 pairs

came home early coz I was dying in the cold and rain and wind but had a faaaaaabbb time at the bbq and met some lovely people who I can see myself being friends with. (However the food was a bit poo....oh well!)

Split was down to 2:08 today!!!! :king1:

I didn't actually get that whole Fresher thing.
I probably had it when I left my family in South Africa and moved to England, but when I got to Cambridge I was way too busy moving and running about doing practical stuff to really think much about the social side. I also just assumed that I wasn't likely to meet anybody in any kind of useful sense so early, and that I'd start finding friends once I had settled in and was beginning to often see the same people on a regular basis in a more natural setting. I still think this is pretty much how it works. I didn't particularly need everybody to work out who I was in the first week or two, because they'd only forget, or work it out eventually if they needed to.
Having said that, my college parents were both quite useful.
I just let three dodgy-looking strangers out of Emma with my Core-key. Is that bad?

Well it sounds like you don't really want them around in college

Considering you're a fresher, they were probably just second or third years that you don't know yet leaving the Old Court party - we live all over the place! Besides, even if they're not, there's no problem with letting them out! They're hardly going to terrorise the college from without...
The freshers this year at Clare seem (ever so slightly) less annoying that I'd anticipated. Still annoying though.

Of course it's the annoying ones that stick out in your mind!

On my first night here one of my fellow freshers met some eastern european bloke at a party and then brought him back into college, where he proceeded to rob loads of laptops and stuff. Not mine though, so was pretty funny.
Anyone up for the pub quiz at the Union on Wednesday night? I have a feeling that if I don't commit to something I may not be able to make Thursday lectures...

Peterhouse is like that. Most people are really nice, but the annoying people can cast a dark light over all of it
Er I appear to have subscription. But I haven't paid any money....:hmmmm:

Either you've donated coursework for the lazy to plagiarise, or someone likes you enough to pay it for you. Probably the latter
