You did not :judge: It does have a few shelves, but not as many as SPT. The problem isn't that it is dark but that the bulb is completely inadequate.
Oh.. that. Well that's standard for college rooms. I just bring my own lighting each time

New Terry Pratchett is in Heffers  I'm going to get it as soon as I have finished my summer project...

Or maybe wait until my loan has come through and I do the massive shop for things which I have forgotten / run out of. Like toothpaste.

NEW PRATCHETT!!!?!?!?! Where!? :teeth:

Ooo. My mum is in town, I'm gonna call her and get her to get it. Not waiting 'till the weekend when I can go in myself, no way.

Meanwhile I'm annoyed that I'll probably have R100 in cash left at the airport tonight, which is really too little to change into £s, but they won't have the Pratchett here yet :grumble: Still - the moment I get out of baggage claim tomorrow...

Thanks. I'll do it at some point but it's annoying that you can't do an "in-place upgrade" from Vista Home Premium to 7 Professional.
New Pratchett looks interesting but since it parodies a world I only have a hazy knowledge of and almost zero interest, I'm not sure if I'll enjoy it as much as some of the others. But knowing Pratchett it will still be very funny. I do like stories about the Unseen University!

EDIT: Apparently its actually not bad, even for people who couldn't care less about football! Not actually a spoiler, just a review:

Lol, looks like I have alot of catching up to do.

Haha, not necessarily - that was just a 250m sprint, and I'm pretty sure I'd die if I tried that pace over 2K. I also used to row competitively, although that was a couple years ago, now.

No, your college should automatically have activated it for you.

Thanks
Anyone know anywhere where I can get a cheap bike near Queens?

So, now that I have a car in Cambridge... where the hell do I go with it?! Currently, I can only think of a. the lab (the car's raison d'etre) and b. Tesco?

Well I'm not the right person to be talking to. I don't row at all. I just started incorporating a rower into my gym routine because its the only vaguely cardio-esque piece of equipment our college gym has, I can't do weights every day, and I don't always feel like walking to Fenners (uni gym)
Nonetheless I like to know I'm doing things right, so I try to get my split down based on advice from Cam chat boaties :yep: Current record is 2:08, but each time I row I keep at it for 30mins, usually on a resistence of level 7 or higher. For that length of time the best speed I can keep up so far is about 2:14. Still... its getting better

(I'm a very goal driven person in case you couldn't tell :o:)

Take the resistance down to 4. Then you'll have a meaningful comparison with the splits and scores that boaties bandy about. No-one who uses an erg as part of rowing training would set the resistance above 4 or 5, because that's realistic for how water feels. Of course, you're free as a non-boatie to do whatever.

Its mainly for fitness. So with higher resistance you're working much harder and get more cardio out of the whole thing. I think having the split as a goal helped me to work on my technique and now I'm finding that I use my legs properly, where before my arms and especially back took the strain.

If I ever row, I'll put it down lower. But at the moment, on four or five, I could row for an hour. And I don't have an hour. I need to knacker myself out in 30 - 40mins, otherwise its hard to squeeze it in.
(Mind you I'll experiment on that setting per your suggestion)

Come and visit us out at Waterbeach! and bring anyone else who fancies escaping Cambridge, and enjoying playing with cats, sheep and chickens by the river.

That's going to be my route too, but I guess I'm less annoyed as I'm going to go from 32-bit to 64-bit...

If you want to get stuff for your room/house, there's always the bunch of home-store type places near Asda off Coldham's lane.

Alternatively, get the hell out of the city while you still can. Or that could just be how I'm feeling today for some reason :s:

Is 64-bit stable now? (i.e. there aren't software/hardware compatibility issues or anything?) And are all modern processes (i.e. Intel Core 2 Duo) 64-bit?

As far as I'm aware, yes to both! Some older 32-bit only software can still be run in hardware compatibility mode with relatively few glitches.

Now, most modern hardware (i.e. last few years) have working 64-bit drivers, so that should be less of an issue. I'd still double check your hardware before making the switch though. (Not necessarily aimed at you!)

With the disclaimer that you're free to do whatever you want since it's for fitness not for rowing, I'm still not sure you get that it's how hard you push, not the resistance, that determines the workout. It's perfectly possible to knacker yourself out the the point of throwing up in 6-7 minutes on a "normal" resistance. (to be fair, there is a place for higher resistances, but you're not a 100kg guy attempting to pull 1:10 splits)
Reply 2818
But the resistance gives you something to push against, no? From what you're saying, you could get the same workout from making vigorous rowing motions in the air if you did them fast enough as you could pulling against the machine - which obviously isn't the case.
just seen this thread
how are people guillible enough to beleive stuff like that!
