Didn't think a trip clubbing would be your kind of thing for alleviating bad moods

The van :p:

I'm appreciating now the problem of living on top of the bar. And the benefits of a 24h library. Once the formal swappers have returned, at least. Rowdy bunch! And at the moment I've got a load of people eating cake on the roof of the bar with Funk da bar going on underneath us. I think it's all really cool.

The van

People seem to be calling it just "Life" nowadays which is confusing for those of us who consider "Life" to be a nightclub. Maybe it's because it's now the "Trailer of Life" rather than the "Night Life Van" or whatever. Grrr.

Yes, I appreciated this last year... on the plus side you get Lapwing in your room from the bar (at least in Robinson) which lets you dodge college bandwidth limits.

Anyway, I have a 9am tomorrow, I'm going to bed.

well it's not that I was by myself or anything, I have a couple of good friends, it was just one of those evenings I guess. I feel like I'm the stupidest person ever, super boring and way too quiet. And it doesnt help that my friends here seem to talk a lot about how they have their lives planned out and I have no idea what my future holds. That and I've kind of gone off drinking more than a couple of glassses of wine so feel held back with socialising...and everything just started to remind me too much about the bad bits of Cambridge. I think I need to lower my expectations about what this year's going to be like, I keep thinking it's going to be a totally fresh start but it's not coz I'm still very much the same person I was last year so that, at least, is held constant.

I've also come to realise that I'm probably quite a cold/off-standish kind of person which doesnt help.

Anyway, I'm going to bed, I reckon.

The problem with fresh starts is that they don't automagically happen. I've been trying for a few years now, and I've gradually improved (although moving to a new country and trying to get my language skills up to a conversational level did not really help that much) - but it seems that the big changes in life come when you least expect them. I've found that keeping my expectations down worked for me, but it's not an optimal solution.
I'm doing some committee work for a society this year (and I was at Kelsey Kerridge doing advertising, which I'll have to admit I was a bit scared of at first). At the moment, I'm signing up to employers' Q&A sessions and at the same time I'm rather scared that I'm going to make a fool of myself because they'll think my English is not good enough to work/intern at their firm. I also have quite a few events to attend over the next few days, plus all the leftover university stuff from last term - basically I'm trying to just jump into 'new waters' and so far it's working, if only by keeping me quite busy!

I'm not usually a big proponent of "self-help" books, but I've recently read one that kind of impressed me, it's the dated but well-written "7 habits of highly effective people" by S. Covey. You'll have to take everything in there with a pinch of salt and it's of course a lot harder to apply it in practice than to read it, but I found it (esp. the first three chapters) very inspiring - without offering some illusionary 'foolproof' method to solve all of your problems within 24 hours.

Perhaps, but if you look hard enough this is surprisingly common. I've long since come to the conclusion that there's nothing wrong with being introverted; it's just inherently difficult to find others who are similarly minded.
urgh! This is the first time i've seen 8am. in almost a week and frankly it looks even uglier when its set to be followed by a 9am. lecture!
munro90
do you live out over the backs too?
mine seems to have sorted itself out now.

Nope, beside the Round Church/Union. It's also working better for me now.

I like Clare cellars. Good atmosphere.

Where you at the MCR thing organised last night? I wanted to go to cellars to enjoy my last night before lectures started but we were forced out by the grad freshers instead :<.

On the plus side, the MCR bar was opened to everyone. Did you go? They had the most incredible selection of whiskeys.
Aaargh, I have a lecture in 37 minutes. This does not give me enough time to get ready and eat breakfast. :frown:

I predict a rapid increase in league-table related threads after this: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/education/8295336.stm

Nice to see we've smashed the scum though.

Yay  Удача! (Good luck). Isn't whatever you're doing really Russian related? How exciting
[rant]I am secretary of the rowing club, so when someone sends a message saying 'is the AGM on Tuesday, does that mean we can't have an outing?' and i respond saying 'yes it is and it would be possible to have an outing before it', its not nice to get a nasty email from someone else accusing me of always butting in and jumping the gun, just because they are organising outings this week. Bloody women![/rant]

I can't stop coughing now. I'm going to have no friends :frown:

Heh, after freshers' week I had a cough for two weeks straight. I made it into a virtue. At the end of lectures I would apologise to people sitting near me for my coughing and then engage them in conversation. :p:

Sorry, I'm in a moaning mode... I had been standing and fake-smiling and yelling "are you interested in xyz" for at least 12 hours over the two days of freshers' fairs, so am not really in the best of moods. :p:

I signed up to the mailing list for Cambridge University Bowmen and I noticed that you did as well :p:

The societies fair was a little underwhelming. There didn't seem to be as much free stuff as last time. Apart from chocolates from the Lib Dems and all the discount vouchers, there was hardly anything...
Bah, the revelation from my new Spanish supervisor is that I have to read two Spanish books and one Spanish history book and write my essay for Monday.

And because of this I'm watching House. Definitely the best solution.
