Wow, I feel like crying. I knew it would be bad, but I had not idea it would be this bad.

4 hours of lectures today, more lectures tomorrow, 2 supervisions on Monday (that I only got the stuff for today and have no idea how to do). What happened to freshers week?

Yeah, they like to hit you as hard as possible as soon as possible to get you into the idea of hard work. It slackened off in my subject for the few weeks of term after the first.

As for the reading: go for journal papers before books because they are short. Read introductions and conclusions to start getting a feel for the topic and what info you need, and then you can go back to the more useful bits of reading to go through the whole thing and pick out the detail.

Bah, the revelation from my new Spanish supervisor is that I have to read two Spanish books and one Spanish history book and write my essay for Monday.

And because of this I'm watching House. Definitely the best solution.

I'm trying to find House-watchers in college. It shouldn't be too hard. I've found a couple already, but I'm struggling to remember who they were. :o:

Loads of people watch House and you'll start remembering people eventually :p:

I'm making progress on the Spanish. By this I mean I've watched another House episode and written the title of the thing I'm meant to be taking notes on (The Economy 1875-1914: Stagnation and Progress). And my tea is cold :frown:

EDIT: Thanks for the rep Hollybobs, although I really shouldn't be rewarded for being this lazy at the beginning of term :p:

Does anyone have a pair of bolt croppers? My bike lock is broken (I think someone tried stealing my bike and tried to jam a screwdriver into the lock mechanism...) and I therefore can't unlock it

Ask the college maintenance staff tomorrow morning?

I don't live in college (love it- my last college bill was £1.40 :p: ) and live about a 25 minute walk from college (by the train station). I am going to try asking my neighbours or the local bike shop for some help this weekend. I only really need my bike next week...

Was I the only one who read this headline and thought something major had happened toProf. Wyllie?

Yeah?

Thought so :colondollar:

Yup, it's for path. It's horrendously oversubscribed, both from the medic and natsci ends.... I've told my DoS, who asked the course organiser, who basically said "we'll see how it goes tomorrow". The problem is that it's not just a matter of a few people with clashes, but a whole group of people, so it can't be as simple as swapping people around. And until this is sorted, I don't even know what subjects I'm doing, can't arrange supervisions and can't organise anything extra-curricular or social around it.

The medics don't really have a choice in that though (as they all have to do path!), am a bit surprised at it being so oversubscribed though as that certainly wasn't the case two years ago (or at least that was the impression I got)! Hope the practicals will work out for you though...

Apparently, the problem was that there were ~30 more medics than they expected... but now that you say that path is compulsory for medics, then there really isn't much excuse for the dept not to have a contingency plan, because they would have known in advance that there will be more medics than normal (from a year beforehand, in fact), and could've done something like limit the number of people who can sign up for natsci path in the first place (rather than letting us, then saying that we can't do practicals).

Wow, that was a massive sentence. I need to breathe a little....

To add to my list of problems, my ensuite shower does not work. The power is so low that for the first 10 mins it gives a drizzle, hardly enough to cover the whole body, then after that it degenerates so that there is actually no water coming out unless I hold it parallel to the floor and at knee height. I've complained to the porters twice now, but they're saying that it's because the pipes in the ensuite are narrower than communal bathrooms so the pressure is supposed to be lower, and that if I want to have a higher pressure shower than I should buy a new showerhead with my own money and ask them to fit it (for free, very kindly  ). I wouldn't have minded using a communal shower, but if my ensuite shower is not functional, then I shouldn't have to pay the higher rent for an ensuite room. Argh!!!

And I now have all three of my weekly supervisions at 9am. Life just keeps getting better for me, and it's been day 1.... :o:

Thank goodness I have no lectures tomorrow. The unpacking continues... :hmpf: And Computing still haven't given me an ethernet cable, so I'm still coming to the library to access internet each day

I saw Athena's lovely new room today, and bumped into generalebriety, and walked past ukebert and the ceilidh band on the way here

My room in Old Court is AWESOME! And the size is mediated by a massive cupboard which allows me to not have stuff cluttering my room and makes it feel bigger. The light is great. I have a great view. I love the sound of the chapel bell which is right next to my window, and I'm only sharing my kitchen and bathroom with two other people  And the stone staircase rocks  [no pun intended :ninja:]

And I just bought the new Pratchett which looks awesome! :king1:

And I'm ignoring my looming dissertation title submission deadline :flute:

I've long since come to the conclusion that there's nothing wrong with being introverted; it's just inherently difficult to find others who are similarly minded.

Aaargh, I have a lecture in 37 minutes. This does not give me enough time to get ready and eat breakfast. :frown:

The societies fair was a little underwhelming. There didn't seem to be as much free stuff as last time. Apart from chocolates from the Lib Dems and all the discount vouchers, there was hardly anything...

:argh:Not much to add to what the other said, except that everybody's in the same boat the first time. It gets easier. Your supervision essays don't count for anything - they're just material for discussion in the supervision and practice for your exams. The first ones aren't supposed to be good! And nobody else really understands the questions either  So just answer it by what makes sense to you and try not to let the panic stop you.
Major relief; I can get all the samples for my dissertation done at $8 a whack in Vancouver, as opposed to the £50 that London was offering. Plus I got two free glasses of wine today.

If anybody is interested in watching the David Attenborough talk on Monday, but hasn't got a ticket, there is going to be a live video stream in the Cockcroft lecture hall between 4pm and 6pm. There's also a pretty decent afternoon tea being organized beforehand (we have obscene amounts of lemon cake and cupcakes). Fill yer' boots.

Agree so much. I spent so much time flapping yesterday before I cracked a whip on myself and figured out I was at least somewhat capable of doing the work. Panic is scarier than the work itself, definitely. To begin with, at least.

Why are physics A, physics B and maths not scheduled in a 3-hour block with one after the other on the same day? It would surely be the most sensible thing to do, since it's probably the most common combination of 1B natsci options. As it is, they're at 9, 11 and 12, leaving an annoying gap.

Quite true; my first essays were a pile of incompetent ****. It's something you learn to understand over time, becoming almost mechanical, in a way.

To let you rest and regain your focus? To encourage you to do a bit of work?

Did you come to rehearsal tonight? If so then apologies for not rooting you out, there were rather a lot of people there :o: You probably would have seen me though. I was sitting next to the woman with the GORGEOUS Piano Accordion (and it's not often that you'll hear me say that).

I had a cunning plan to learn an instrument over the summer, join the ceilidh band, then get into may balls free. The first bit turned out to require more effort than I was willing to give.

It's not just that though, you have to learn an instrument, go to rehearsal nearly every week, do a decent amount of gigs (4 or 5 a term) and then you might get a ticket...

Excalibur
Do you take pianists?

Yes, but it's a bit ticklish. We have a piano in the music room but we have no stage piano (although we could get something without too much trouble). We have no piano part, so you'll have to vamp from the chords. We generally get a few pianists sign up and they don't turn up.

I was there, yeah. If you're at the TSR meet I dare say we'll recognise one another now. I was the male violinist with a beard stood next-ish to Chess Piece Face (at least, I didn't see any other lefty guitarrists) in the second half, but I didn't say anything because I figured it'd make more sense to talk on Sunday. Really enjoyed it. I realise it was a slooow speed session tonight compared to what you might normally do, but still. It was just so good to be in a group that size again. And I could listen to our glorious leader talk for hours on end. I'm having so many accentsquees around college as well. It was kind of also nice to go to a Real World pub rather than be in College, but it also seemed strange actually having to pay normal prices. liek omg. It was then that it struck me just how much wine college have provided me this week.

It's not really like that, if they put you on at 4am or 5am (normal for Ceilidh) you don't get to enjoy the ball because you have to prepare and not get drunk/worn out before you can perform. It's a hard life performing at balls!
