I just think that if everybody had enough to pay for their basic needs then they'd learn pretty damn fast to prioritise and budget because they'd have no choice. I guess it seems so bizarre to me because I come from a poor country and my mind boggles at the notion that the state can factor in details like money for clothes shopping and socialising...
It seems that "all income is expendable income" might suit some lifestyles a little too well.

Ah yes. Well my parents struggled financially for most of my life, so I grew up accustomed to having little which helps me alot now because I find it fairly easy to resist impulses to buy unecessary things by stopping and carefully considering how much I really need it and how much use I'm likely to get out of it as well as whether a cheaper option is available. Given that I'm bound for impoverished grad-hood, this is a rather useful frame of mind to maintain.
I agree, and largely follow a similar path, apart from when it comes to books. Largely exacerbated by using Borders as an indoor street to get to the department.
I'm going to stay firmly away from wine offers. No. More.

Really? But I find Heffers so much nicer to shop in than Borders

I suddenly had the inspiration to fill my room with Peterhouse port, South African Amarula and wine in my final year Now I have to remember to invite people around to drink it.

Heffer's has its charms, but (a) no 20% student discount and (b) they have very few graphic novels. I go there for 'the Russians'. Waterstones is just a bin.

I will volunteer in the future, but, I hope you can sympathize, the thought is a little too close to home at the moment.
4 bottles originally at £8.99 + 2 bottles originally at £7.99 gives a £31.94 saving. Major success
I just had one of the 3 for £10 wine bottles at Formal - it was just about the most horrible white I've ever had ("Cape Town (?) Sauvingon (sp?) Blanc 2009") - avoid at all costs. Also, Varsity Launch Party at Cindies wasn't great - the trip better be better. Now to attempt a Macro assignment - fun times.

Yes. Especially since it is open fairly late and so ideal for popping into on the way back from Sainsbury's. Even though Heffer's is nicer.

Well Sauvignon Blanc is horrid in general, but I'm sorry to hear that my second country produced a bad wine; they do have some really amazing ones. Perhaps not at 3 for £10 though.
And yet you decided not to take advantage of multiple free, vodka-related drinks? Shame on you :P
Why did I not know about this!?

No worries - most of it was downed in any case. But it's annoying that it no longer lasts me a night out - damn tolerance.
That Cape Town wine is awful, I've had it many a time.
I'm one of those middle class (ish?) students with parents who can't really afford to fund me through university, although I'm lucky in that my relatives all give me far more than they can afford. I manage to do everything I want with careful budgeting and good organisation of my money
