And yet you decided not to take advantage of multiple free, vodka-related drinks? Shame on you :P

I only ended up with one free drink in the end! What rubbish! Although I definitely did make the most of Clare's various forms of free booze. :p:

Can any Russianists help?

I got a message on my blog guestbook from 'человека'. The message itself is just a series of numbers and symbols but i'm wondering if maybe that's cos my computer isn't enabled to read the Cyrillic. Perhaps it will show up on your screen?

Fiddling about with character encodings, I can get it to show as:
Original post by &#1095
Слабо моё имя расшифровать 5e946b235b22be1913b69492138710be ?

Which is "Slabo moё imia rasshifrovat'" in the American Library of Congress system if you still can't read it, followed by a string of numbers and letters - I may still be failing to encode it all correctly. The Russian bit is something about deciphering the name of (I think) the writer, whose name translates as "person," so either it's some kind of weird puzzle someone gave you, or more likely it's just spam.

Change your browser encoding to Russian/Cyrillic and it might show up. The message reads "Слабо моё имя расшифровать 5e946b235b22be1913b69492138710be ?"

slabo moe imja rasshifrovat' numberrrrr. I'm thinking maybe technofail/spam, but I really am not sure. Time for a Real Russianist. ho hum.

I'm starting to really feel my room isn't so greatly placed. Just above the bar door. If I could actually remember any conversations from one night to the next morning, I could run our college gossip newsletter. ^______^ I'd've gone to the library to work but I didn't want to be constantly sneezing in there. ^ WHS. Supergrunch, are you going to the Icelandic thing then? I've decided I'll definitely go to the Beginners introductory meet, at the very least, and see what I think. I've a feeling actually doing something cool and ab initio will make me feel better about myself as compared to the actual MML course I'm doing.

I'm also considering signing up, just because I can, though I doubt I'll have the time. I'll hopefully be doing the free Ukrainian classes though, and after much persuasion I've managed to join the beginners' Sanskrit class for theology students, as well as the All-Comers' Urdu class. This will mean I will have no social life, but I justify it by thinking how many more people I will be able to socialise with by the end of it all...

Sounds like my Y12. It sounds exciting, but don't be afraid to drop things at any point. It's more fun to have moderate workload and delve than not have time for actually doing well at any of the things you're doing.

I'm fairly certain that the number at the end is a hash of some sort.

Heheh. Well done. How did they select you? They never would have spelt my name right.

They just emailled round the college looking for middle class state school kids (that is those who had the option of private school i think) so i replied and did a phone interview, still annoyed they got my name wrong given that i definitely corrected it on the transcript of my interview. Ella jones who was also in the article is in my college too

Yeah, I'll guess I'll go along to the beginners meet to see what it's like, although if it's at that time every week I might have some clashes in the future. Also I wonder how intermediate the intermediate class will be, so maybe I'll give that a look too (given I tend to take a non-standard linguistics approach to learning languages, and I've already studied Icelandic a little in that context). I expect beginners will be more appropriate though.

Going to ask a question on TSR? Have you tried typing the pertinent terms into google first? Because if you haven't, and i can answer your question from the first page of hits by doing so, I ain't gonna be happy  So remember: Stop. Think. Google. TSR. In That Order!

So apt :five: I'd recommend changing  to :nah: though.

I expect it is spam, I was just mildly curious to find out what it says.

Ah, you're one of those ;p I spent so long thinking about taking Linguistics, but I think I need that other more practical side to learning languages as well. The one that let's you speak it and not just bring up cool grammar points in conversation.

I also know I need the structure of lessons to learn languages properly, I can't do it just by myself. I tried Finnish once by myself: I can remember 'minä olen mursu' - I am a walrus. That is it.

Well linguistics is basically my life, especially syntax and phonology, so yeah. :p: I've had (or am having?) a go at learning Finnish, though haven't much time for it at the moment. But then I know all about its vowel harmony, and it's agglutinative morphology, etc. Speaking a language isn't the same thing as analysing it linguistically, like you say - I've done the latter with loads of languages, but can only really manage the former with 4, two being only to GCSE level. And speaking a language gives you lots more things to analyse of course. So yeah, Icelandic funtimes ahead. It'd be cool if you come too ge.

In other news, waking up with cramps in both calves at the same time is NOT good :afraid:

Especially during a lecture :sadnod: :p:

In all seriousness though, all these introductory lectures is making me look like I have narcolepsy
I was gratified that, when going over a misleadingly intimidating physics question, the supervisor voiced my sentiments: "now, at this point in the exam, you're thinking 'oh ****'". Good lesson in not panicking and just looking for what the question wants, tho'. :yep:

It could be lupus

I was definitely a "2nd row sleeper" last year. :sadnod:

With or without good intentions?

 erm well some with good intentions, but today in Social Context of Health and Illness I didn't think to much of the subject itself. I was right as well for my negative sentiments towards it, as it turned out that all it is really is common sense and opinion about the health system and patients.

At least I don't get narcolepsy during dissections :p:

can mods see given reps or does this stuff need to be reported?

Whut!?
Supermods can see reps, but they don't check it all the time. People have to report it.
