Sort of this, but more the sense of an actual occasion where you go to enjoy yourself rather than to just eat dinner.

Indeed. When I went to Caius formal, I only managed about a glass of my wine because we only got the corkscrew halfway through the main 'course'.

Ok so college want me to go to some ceremony on Monday to be made into a scholar :lolwut: I thought I was one already!

Just bought some more Beechams from the chemist because this wretched cold still hasn't entirely left :hmpf:

And I really really hate the SPS Vampiress Librarian :reaper:
I went in to renew a book after she sent an email round telling us that the renewal option on Newton wasn't working properly. When I brought her the book to renew, she demanded that I go to a computer terminal and try to renew it myself first 'just in case it works'!!! I mean for crying out buckets - if that isn't intentionally trying to be difficult because she despises students, I don't know what is...
Then, after I 'self-issued' myself four books later on after a lecture (having got the message that she really doesn't want to help anybody ever), she then screamed at me as I walked out the door, demanding to know whether I had noticed that one of the books I took was overnight loan only!
'Oh you mean this one right here with the massive OTT sticker on it? The one that I desperately searched for another copy of rather than take out? Oh no, I didn't notice that at all... :nah:'

Gnargh! :argh:

My DoS hasn't sorted out any supervisors for me LOL

Are you sure S/he is supposed to? From what I can tell, Education is similar to SPS in that you simply contact the course director with your essay attached once you want a supervision.
Good to see there are some Tegan and Sara fans around here. *thumbs up*

Had an email before saying that my essay is actually due in for tomorrow and not for Thursday. Not good. Still need to read a fair whack really, although I least I know what I'm answering now so I can target the reading.
Woo, handed in my first supervision work

Didn't finish it, but hey, I've handed it in on time :proud:

I'm still yet to finish a piece of work, although I've now progressed on to planning the essay that was due last Wednesday. Stupid sicky times :frown:

My DoS is the course director, and yes we do have to contact our supervisors when we want a supervision, but we're meant to know who they are in advance :s-smilie:

yep my facebook status currently is
"Drinking games of any kind are unacceptable. They can result in people getting drunk very quickly and laying themselves open to all kinds of risks. If ‘pennying’ or similar practices occur, the Tutorial subsidy for Formal Hall will be withdrawn."argh draconian much?

its just unnecessary! the new rules on buying wine are silly enough but thats just ridiculous.
are you coming on wednesday? we should probs try get jules to organise a massive medics formal table inculding the clinical students at some point.

Still. They haven't threatened you with cleaning the court yard cobbles with a toothbrush. That's always something :p:

Jules?!

Nah I'm not I'm afraid. Two reasons- grads got the email about tickets a litttle too late, and I'm off to Luton tonight for my next placement.

Did you guys have the start of term drinks in G3? I think this was the first time in years that the clinical students weren't invited :frown: I actually kept that evening free weeks in advance y'know!

that actually sounds kinda fun- or at least funny. i feel they'll find it very hard to police (though one of our number has volunteered to penny the dean)

jules is the answer to your second question. Ashley's on sabbatical for michaelmas and lent so jules griffin (biochem fellow- lectures bioenergetics in first year these days) is our dos. thus our drinks were in g4 (which is a lot smaller than g3) and only 1st and 2nd years were there and barely any of the supervisors resulting in it being a rather brief yet boring affair (though there were generous helpings of wine as ever)
I've now got 2 free bottles of wine from ocado. I don't generally drink but am saving it to share with my family when they come and visit.

is it a bad reflection of my lifesytle that the word "shotgun" had almost reached my lips before i had even read your second sentance? :p:

I love alcohol and happily imbibe any tasty version of it that comes my way. I do, however, really hate being drunk, so I tend to stop once it has any effect. I seem to have high tolerance, though, so usually I can down a fair amount before I stop :king1:

This view has always confused me, there's very few situations for me, where an alcoholic drink tastes better than a non-alcoholic equivalent. So I kinda figure, why drink, if not to get drunk?..Although, this option is becoming increasingly expensive(well, would be, if I didn't just finish everyone else's wine..)
Does anybody know if all students at Oxford get a pigeon-hole in their colleges for receiving post etc, like we do at Cambridge? I'd like to write a letter to a friend at Oxford you see and I'd prefer it to be a surprise. So if I were to write a letter to said friend, addressed to Merton College Oxford (I can easily find that address on the internet), could I reasonably rely on my letter reaching its destination?
(I know there is at least one person here who has experience of Oxford, and I don't want to start a thread on the Oxford forum just for this quite insignificant question!)

If they're living in College, I think it's a dead cert. If they're living out of college, like second years often do, probably still a yes.

Have been listening to them for the first time - sounds interesting.

I thought as much. Though to be certain, I think I will have to foray into the Oxford forum...
I am very tempted to buy (another) whiteboard to do working on, to try to cut down on my ridiculous paper use (at the moment I'm using rough paper to do messy solutions and then writing them up neatly, so they're easier to mark).
