Well other than the cathedral (which probably is quite impressive) i'm guessing there isn't anything else to do?
There are several very cool massive antique shops, several fantastic tea shops including one which won the national best tea award (Peacock) there's a great restaurant (The Boathouse) linked to the Cambridge Chop House, there's Oliver Cromwell's museum and lots of very scenic grassy places to flop and the riverside with loads of boats. And the cathedral is one of the best in Britain.
"all of the students accepted over the last 4-5 years got an average of 92-96% in their most relevant A level"
Would people on here read that as a) all of the students who applied each got 92-96% or b) the average over all of the students was 92-96%
And would you say it is a bit ambiguous?

Oh that sounds alright actually, the antique shops mainly (and somewhat surprisingly). Thanks a lot

Yes, but I might not have noticed that it was unless you drew my attention to it.

Sure...
I'm confused when people say they don't have anything to do. To my mind most places in the world don't offer much to do, but when you're with friends you find almost anything interesting because you wonder in and out of things , even though the main thing you're actually 'doing' is just socialising - which doesn't really require entertainment. And Cambridge has plenty of places to be while socialising. But maybe that's just me. I'll admit its not exactly May Week any longer.

It's closer to b) - all those accepted (given offers and met them) in the last 4-5 got an average of between 92-96% in their most relevant A-level. I think it would be highly unlikely that none of those accepted got below 92% in their most relevant A-level. And yes it's slightly ambiguous.
I would say a, and wouldn't have thought there was any ambiguity if you hadn't suggested b. If it is b, it's very badly phrased IMO.
hah, and you're a physicist too
I just got negged for commenting on that ambiguity: "for being a physicist who doesn't know what an "average" is"
and for what it's worth I think it does read as (a ), although as alex said clearly (b ) is true

You are kinda right, but I wanted to do something to treat a friend - and getting away/going somewhere gives the impression you've put a bit more effort in and stuff

I agree that you must be right, but as the person reading it I would almost certainly assume it was (a) because I would presumably only have read it if I was interested in being admitted, and that would instantly make me take the more paranoid view

(a), and no. If nothing else, why would they average over all the students and not come up with anything more specific than "92 - 96%", rather than, say, "94.3%"?

You're reading what he dais rather than what he meant. I used to have the similar problem of writing what I meant: most of my posts ended up consisting of careful explanations of how I wasn't implying anything in my previous posts.
