I think I've pulled a back muscle dragging my shopping from the porters' lodge.

I'm also in a really bad mood today.

I think if you go into Market Square, then cut through Borders, it's fairly soon on your left as you head towards Sidney Street.

Thanks, though I wouldn't fancy getting my haircut really short. Might ask first how short they will cut it
Glutamic Acid
Hi. I'm Glutamic Acid and I'm an alcoholic. I'd like to curb my drinking problem, but first: does anyone know where to get some dirt cheap haircuts in Cambridge? I have literally no concern for the quality, merely how cheap it is; my issue is that my hair gets too long. Are there student hair cut places, or is Cambridge a little too affluent for that? What about if I paid a Japanese tourist to do it?

Mr Polito's is quite good - I used to have my hair cut there before Sean Hanna started throwing 30% off vouchers at us. It's on Silver Street, just down from Queens (opposite what I believe is the Land Economy faculty).

I'd like to go to the halloween one but I'm going to be out at the posties picket line when they go on sale this evening :frown:.

Seriously? As in like joining the strike?

Holy hell I have a History essay due in six hours and I've only managed to finish all the reading! Has anyone done an essay in a record number of hours?!

Yes - 2 hours for an Economic History essay including 'reading' (though the topic had been covered in lectures).
Funny you should write that - I've got to go off and write an essay on whether WWI was determined through economics or military strength now.

Canned Door
Highlight of the other night, around 12:30ish. A few of us in someone's room, mostly quite lethargic. I said "hey, put NWS 3rd mvt on " and fell asleep on the floor a couple of minutes later. Woke up confused a while later and completely naturally asked for the fourth to be put on. Fell asleep again.

Yeah, I think groups has been the hardest so far, but also the most interesting. How many supervisions have you had so far? We've had 3 and all our supervisors have been really nice :yy: Is it true you get supervised by Gowers?

I've got my first supervision this afternoon. I'm not supervised by Gowers, but I know someone who is.

Hmm, will probably go with a note, although I don't think anyone really thinks food appears in the fridge for the communal good.

Well, no, but a similar thing kept happening to me so I assumed it was people coming in drunk and hungry and grabbing the first thing they could find; a note might be enough to make them at least think about it!

I've had a bottle of wine nicked from our gyp room and taken to the one down the corridor which was really annoying since that was a gift from a friend.

The ironic thing is that someone who normally uses the one down the corridor kept her milk in our gyp room's fridge: when someone in good faith took a little bit of milk she wrote a really aggressive note and accused us of stealing her milk.

oh well.
Reply 4109
I think aggression is justified. With this sort of thing you really don't know how far people will go, when it will end... So if you don't write a really scary note, people might not be convinced that you really mean it and will consider to try and get away with violations that they consider to be negligible.

My staircase-mates have been using my teaspoons and not washing them up. I'm not too fussed because it doesn't really build up to anything that much of a pain to clear, and I haven't lost any of the spoons. But if my cutlery starts to live in their room, then there will be words!

Yes, but then nicking someone's bottle of wine?

Molly Warrington. She's our DoS and interviewed me. Intimidating, much?

She's not intimidating! She's nice.

The only really properly unpleasant supervisor who's actually a lecturer as well was Notta Niceperson. She's genuinely not nice :frown:

*and also a bad lecturer. Avoid her Africa papers (well, maybe don't, they're interesting stuff. But be prepared for annoying lectures and supervisions).

No, just going down to see what's happening and hear first hand what their issues are. I don't think a random student with no particular links to the Royal Mail 'joining in' would appreciated :P.

Craggy (I'm quite worried that I've lurked enough to know that a lot of people call her that -_-), it's at the sorting office on Clifton road today/tonight and the mail centre on Henley road tomorrow morning. I don't even know where these places are :P.

Yes, but then nicking someone's bottle of wine?

 That really is wrong, 'specially if it was anything more than £3.99 sainsbury's cheapo red. You're justified going to almost any lengths with revenge.

She is nice but I feel like I need to write a really good essay for her. So far it's been a case of 'stick something vaguely coherent into a word document and slot in some potentially vaguely relevant quotes' ><. I have yet to hear about Notta Niceperson, I'll ask my very opinionated college granny.

Ah right; fair enough. I haven't been following it but I would be prepared to bet that it's over pay, job cuts and modernisation of working practices. It almost always is.

Last year we kept on having cutlery disappearing for a few weeks before reappearing, which was slightly annoying. Luckily this year we share all the kitchen stuff as we cook together / for each other anyway.

They do a fire alarm test every Thursday morning here where it just goes off for a few seconds. Today I was in the bathroom and it scared me senseless, I went pale and everything
Strange, we test on a Thursday too but I've never heard it.

Really?! That can't be good.

Seeing as there's been a bit of an amnesty on lurkers, I suppose I should join the ranks too! :p:

I did my undergraduate degree here from 2002-2005, moved to London and am now back doing an MPhil. Being back is a peculiar mix of weird and strangely normal...

So, because I've been here before, if you've any questions, just shoot. I'm not sure I know any more than anyone else who's on here, but I could at least maybe give another perspective! :o:
